hey i have a 35hp 1979 evinrude and she wont fire in #2 off the pull start, but if you can somehow get her to start she runs great, but getting her to start is my problem. it seems like its not firing in #2 at low revs but if it gets in the higher revs it stays running so im assuming #2 must kick on in higher revs... but if it drops low at all it will die. i dont know where to start, im new to boat motors someone please help! Matt

Welcome to iboats.

1st check for spark in that cylinder. Inspect your plugs.

Check your compression in both cylinders.

A motor will still achieve high rpm on one cylinder but lack power under load. You may not be picking up the 2nd cylinder.

A drop in low speed can also mean your low speed circuit in the carb is blocked or dirty. I would put my money on the carb since the low speed circuits are only pin holes that clog easy.

thanks for your relpy,
i have new sparks in it and it only fires in #1, also the plugs are really wet when i take them out..
i dont have the tools to do a compression test, is that important that i do that?
i thought it was an ignition problem either with the coils or points or something... do you really think its a carb problem? ..im not a great mechanic so im hesitant to tear apart my carb.. hehe
thanks

. what year is it. this determine what we can and cannot do because of the placement of coils on certain years. if you don not no year give me the model # off the transom mount.

its a 1979 evinrude, there is no spark in #2 so i swapped the wires to the coils and it made #1 not fire, so its not the coils....
i dont know whats the next step?

i don't have manual for your engine, but after studying the diagrams on brp evinrude, it points to the power pack or pick sensor you can have at brp-evinrude, click english, click parts & access, click engine diagram, then year , then hp., then magneto if you have to pull flywheel you will need a hormonic balancer puller , don't use the bolt that come with it , you will need 1/4x20 #8 harden bolts on it will damage the flywheel. good luck, keep us posted. not familar with you particular engine,so i don't feel qualified to advise you. the real pros will be along, as soon as admin gets the forum straightened out.

Re: 35hp evinrude wont fire in #2 ...help!

Look at the contact surfaces on the points, they might appear burnt, one side may appear pitted.

Condensors go bad, coils get old and crack, and points burn and foul. Since you are going in there it would not be a bad idea to replace the points and condensors.

Points are VERY sensitive to dirt and oil. When I install they I make sure my hands are clean and the last thing I do is wipe the point contact faces with a lint free thick piece of paper on the contacts.

Overall it is not a hard job just a bit tedious.

this is my armature plate, i figured a picture would help you guys to help me out...
ok so i got down under the flywheel, but there are no points that weve been talking about, just the charge coil and sensor coil. would one of those being faulty cause #2 to not have spark? they seem to look ok to me, but should i just replace them anyways?
thanks Matt

ok well the picture didnt seem to work, but all i was showing was the plate with only a charge and sensor coil. which one is most likely to cause no spark in # 2?
any help you guys can give me would be great!

Don t replace untell you clean the ground.. including the nuts, washers, and bolts. Everything Dremel with brass brush works great.
