Remove the outdrive and try to start the engine.

Don't worry about water, you will only be cranking the engine over and if it starts, shut it off immediatly. Your problem is in the outdrive.

Thanks Don,

You you have been truthful and helpful form the beginning! How much of a repair do you think this will cost?

The starter was bad. The engine wants to run but is being restricted. It starts to fire up bu then it stops due to restriction.

I feel the bottom of the boat a rub and it is cyclical when the motor revolutions to start.

So I believe in my heart you are right on. I just wonder what I am looking at to fix it. I want a profesional to service it at this point.

I don't know what it is exactly but I know the problem lies in the outdrive.

The engine wants to turn over and run. It gets stopped cold when trying to start it up.

I also noticed the following:

When I start the boat the rub sound occurs and the lower unit turns to the right. The steering wheel turns by itself until the lower unit/drive has turned as far as it could to the drivers side of the boat if you are looking at it.

I quit trying to start it worrying I might damage the engine/outdrive etc.

Quit trying to start it. Pull the outdrive, then try it.
If it starts OK, then check the ujoints and/or send the drive off for repairs. Until you know exactly what is wrong, there isn't a snowballs chance of knowing what it will cost to fix.

On my cobra, if water was high enough to submerge the starter it also would have been high enough to go through the u-joint bellows and into the drive. Look up re-built cobra drives and you'll see what you're up against. That's why you need to do like Don S says and pull that drive so you can see what type of damage is done.

Update:

I took the boat in today to a shop. The mechanic said that he will pull the drive and look it over.

His guess at this point: 1. gear lube had air bubble and will need a new complete drive. 2. water got to ujoints and gimbal bearing.

To be continued. I share so that others may avoid this problem. It is probably water getting into drive and messing things up. I will know in a weeks time.

If it was an air bubble, it was most likely filled incorrectly. Cobra drives should be filled from the middle fill hole, not the bottom.
