Back the other way now. Inspecting shutters on an 898 package.

It's my understanding that I should be able to inspect/replace the shutters in the opening of the Y pipe without having to pull the motor?

I started on the port side as there is better access due to the trim/lift pump not being there. However, It appears that I can only get to 2 out of the 3 bolts that hold the 'down' pipe onto the Y.

Am I missing something here?

You can't get to the shutters without pulling the engine on the older models. The newer ones with the one piece exhaust Y pipe have the shutters at the top of the Y pipes, the older ones were clear at the bottom and hard to replace.

Well that's a fine how do you do! I guess I'll just have to wait until they get blown down into the exhaust outlet, pull the drive and yank them out.:(

Pulled the drive today and was able to stick a mirror up inside the exhaust to examine the shutters. Fortunately they seem to be snuggly in place and look like they are in good shape.

This boat had been a freshwater boat. I bet that extensive saltwater exposure plays havoc on those little critters.

Just for ref. I had to replace my shutters, Y pipe config. and had to pull the engine only way in. You can get two of the three bolts out and the last one too close to the flywheel hsg. bummer.

You speak with straight tongue IIerrad. That was definitely the way it was. Why did you have to replace yours? Do you use your boat in saltwater? When I looked up the poop shute at the 898 shutters, they looked real clean and good. I could actually reach in with a long screw driver and press on one side of each of them. I could make them rattle a little bit but there was no sign of degradation.

I speculated that saltwater could be murder on them.
