Hello All... So My Dad has a 1976 Bayliner with a Mercury 1150 115 horse outboard on it. We just bought and took it out and it ran pretty good. Had a small issue with the throttle not engaging all the way but we managed to work that out. Took it out the next day and it ran fine for a while until we ran out of gas. Once we refilled the gas tank and started it it back it we could never get the motor to move very fast. we could throttle it up a little bit and it would push about 5 mph but once we gave it more gas it would wind up the motor and we quit moving. We took it out of the water and while its in gear you can spin the prop clockwise and it makes a clicking noise but you cannot move it counter clockwise. In reverse it wont turn more than just a little play both directions. In neutral it spins with no issues or noises both directions. We dont really know much about outboard motors and the book we have is not helpful yet. It seams like it would be a busted forward gear causing it to be able to slip.. Any ideas?

thanks

Your gearbox sounds fine.

Your prop however is not. Take it to a local repair shop, for a re-hub. The rubber part that is between the inner and outer portions of the hub has failed. No big deal, and it happens as props age (deterioration) or after impact with submerged objects (as designed). Shouldn't be exceptionally expensive to fix.

ok so we got a spare prop with the boat and we just mounted it up and it still spins and clicks when rotating in the clockwise direction. Is it supposed to do that? If it is supposed to do that then I guess the next step would be putting it back in the water and seeing how it goes. Can you tell me which direction the prop is spinning when you are moving forward?

Thanks for all the help

Grab your skiis and sunscreen, you're ready for the water. d:)

Your prop clicking is just right. The description you provided is the way it shoudl be.

Happy boating!

If that dosnt work, Id check your shift linkage. sounds like the spline may be slipping out of the gear, or the adjustement is off, so its not quite engageing the gear all the way. could be the lock on the cable inside the engine, or the 'throw' of the cable, or an adjustment on the throttle itself.

Get yourself a set of earmuffs so you can run the motor in the driveway. That way you can check out the forward and reverse at home before taking it to the lake.

SO ... We swapped out that prop, brought it to the lake ... she fired up like she should .. started cruising along pretty slow and let her warm up and then throttled up and off she went. 8) We never would have thought that the prop was bad so THANK YOU all for the help. It did seam to take a LONG time to get warm... i am talking like 15 mins... We would try and throttle up but the motor just wouldnt do it.. once she warmed up it would throttle right up and in fact about 5 mins later we got a little more power out of it. Its an older motor and we know it needs a tune up so we figure once we get that done we will see how it runs.

Thanks again
