I would be very obliged if anyone could help me, as I have just purchased an Evinrude 5.5hp. 1964 (I Think?) could someone help, by telling me what the oil and fuel mix should be, as i would like to start it up but would not want to cause any damage through not feeding it the right mix, also are their manuals available for this engine? Thank you to anyone who replies.:)

Ahoy, Quentin.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Model 5403 is a 1963 5.5HP, Quentin.

Correct fuel mix is 24:1; 1 qt TC-W3 outboard oil to 6 gallons unleaded regular.

It uses Champion J4C spark plugs gapped at .030" (.040" for trolling use).

Magneto points are set at .020"

You can get a generic manual here at iboats, but most of us recommend getting a reprint of the original Service Manual from an online vendor. kencook.com is one.

That is a great little engine. Treat her right and she will outlive you.

JB has a thread in the engine faq forum, which is not workin right now, titled 'awakening a sleeping outboard', full of facts you need to know, what history do you have about this engine? when impeller last changed, carbs rebuilt, fuel pump, plugs, plug wires. etc. if you don't know cheap insurance is to change the impeller right off. as he said treat it right and it will out live you. i have a '55 15hp rude that i use all the time.

J8C is too hot, and could do some harm to that motor. The motor isnt listed in the Champion Spark plug marine guide I use at the store, never checked the site though.

The plugs should be J4C as JB says.........maybe J6C for lots of trolling.

Re: Evinrude 5.5hp 1964 - 5403

Likewise, just yesterday, I started to restore a 5.5 HP Johnson Seahorse CD-19 (Ser # 2230584) that was given to me. From the web, I gained the following facts:
-- 24:1 fuel mix
-- 1962 manufacturer date
-- Champion J4J plugs (from inside motor cover)
-- OMC Type "B" Gear case lube (from inside motor cover)
-- can anyone give me more details??

I removed the plugs (Champion J-6J) and removed the glass bowl which was dark brown along with a dark brown filter??

Right now I'm "winging it" as far as getting the motor started.

Can anyone give me more details on the proper way of restoring the operation of this motor? It probably hasn't run in over 10 years.

Thank you -- Pete

Re: Evinrude 5.5hp 1964 - 5403

J4J is superceded by J4C, so those would be the plugs to use....................

-First thing you probably will want to do is replace the impellor...........rubber doesnt like to sit around, and if you get real unlucky it will come apart and block passages and overheat your motor. On that motor to get the leg off, the powerhead has to come off. Paul Moir has a good thread somewhere on doing that.

-Might be a good idea to rebuild the carberator. The kit can be found here, and is fairly straight foreward. After 10 years of sitting, not knowing how it was stored, there is a good chance you will have varnish gumming stuff up.

-Above all do a compression check to see that the motor is worth the work of impellor replacement etc.......I think somewhere around 100psi and less than 10% difference between the cylinders is a good starting point. If you have questions about these things, start a new post. You will get more help going that route.

Welcome to iboats though8)
