have had tach quit working and replaced rectifier three times in two years.

checked all charging system per omc manual - all fine.

could the power pak or something else be causing the continued problems with rectifiers going bad?

each time i experience the tach problems, i replace the rectifier and all is well for about 9 months to a year.

thanks for the help.

Did you test the rectifier before you replaced it.

Make sure your battery cables are tight to the battery. Loose the wing nuts and replace with stainless nuts and tighten with a wrench.

You don't switch the battery switch(es) when the motor is running do you? This can damage the rectifier.

Re: 1994 112 SPL - Rectifier

I have tested the past rectifiers and they were bad, per the omc manual.

i do not have a battery switch, so switching while running does not occur.

i can check the batteries, but that won't be it.

my lowrance gps/sonar unit did show that the voltage was 13.x volts when the tach was not working. so maybe only one or two diodes went out.

however, i am concerned why on an annual basis do i have to replace the rectifier. i cannot seem to find what is causing this. last rectifier was replaced in may 05.

thanks for the help

If your locator is showing 13+ volts then I suspect the rectifier is not bad and you have a malfunctioning tach. Make sure the rectifier has a good ground.

Re: 1994 112 SPL - Rectifier

Will ohm the rectifier tonight.

Did replace the tach last summer when the same problem occurred. The tach was fine then.

Will repost once I find out if the rectifier is bad.

thanks again for all the expert help.

Re: 1994 112 SPL - Rectifier

All tests show the diodes/rectifier is OK.

I will run a wire directly from my electrical block directly to the tach to eliminate the grey wire.

Could it be the stator windings breaking down/bleeding once the engine gets hot? This would explain the come and go of the tach.

thanks again,

Check that you have a good ground at the tach as well. Sounds like your rectifier is OK.

At speed, watch the voltmeter on the locator. If the stator is breaking down the locator voltage will read battery voltage. If it continuously reads above 13 volts the charging system is working.

Re: 1994 112 SPL - Rectifier

the battery voltage does vary at times-as far down as 12.5v.

i'll keep an eye on that.

i have checked the stator/coil per the omc manual and they ohm out within tolerance.

when the engine is running at good rpm's should the charging system always show 13+ volts or does it depend upon the condition of the battery?

thanks again, i think we're getting closer.
