I just came back from my cabin where I have a Sea King 5 hp outboard. I'm wondering whether there is an owners manual and parts manual still available for it. I'm also wondering about the age. The information I have is:

Model: GG8960A
Serial: 75X663702

I bought it used about 15 years ago and it just continues to run like a charm and I'd like to keep it that way!

Your motor was built by the Gale devision of OMC.It is a 57. If it is a full gearshift F-N-R then it is very similar to the E/J 5.5.And those manuals will serve you well. You can get after market service manuals here at iboats among other places on the net.You may find reprint factory manuals at www.kencook.com. but be prepared to dig deep.

One of the questions I've been wondering about is the gas/oil mix on the motor. I can just barely read the print on the motor, and it recommends a 50:1 gas/oil mix. Does that still make sense with the kind of oils that are available today?

Thanks for the information.

No, All OMC made engines made before 1964 use a 24:1 mix.

The Johnson engine most like it is probably a CD series,10 to 14.

Check with the guys at the Ask A Member board at http://www.aomci.org for the correct mixture. JB is probably right, but some of the 50's motors used bushings instead of true bearings and need a heavier mix, like 16:1, so the bushings won't seize. The oil in the heavier mix actually acts like a liquid bearing...it keeps bushing and motor surfaces apart. If it has true bearings, the 24:1 mix with a good quality modern oil should be just fine.

Any advice on where can I get an impeller for a 1950 5hp seaking.

They use the same impeller as similar vintage OMC outboards. Check with your local supplier, Sierra through NAPA, or the Iboats mall. If no luck there, check the Ask A Member board at http://www.aomci.org
