Any Nissan wrenches out there?

Nissan Pathfinder1998 with V6 MT

Ran perfect (97K) miles until now.

Intermittently idles rough and misses at speed.

Scan code states "cylinder 4 misfire".

Searching finds anything from blown intake gasket, to faulty coil.

Hate to just start replacing, so any trouble shooting help is appreciated.

Definitely start with the basics. Check wires, spark plugs.....anything before the expensive stuff.

[colour=blue]I agree, start with the basics - a comp test.

Love my Nissans - but the guys are right. Start with the basics if you're able to do the work yourself.

Run it in the dark and look for arcing from the #4 plug wire. If nothing, move the #3 wire to replace the #4 and vice versa - does it drop the #3 cylinder now? At 97K it can't hurt to replace the plugs and wires anyway so you may as well just do it rather than playing around, but playing around is an option.

From there I'd run a compression check. That will reveal some of the potential internal failures that could cause this too.

That's really about the extent of what you can do yourself unless I've overlooked something. Here's hoping for a bad plug wire eh?

I just reread the original post and you could have a coil problem with that cylinder too. I know that can be diagnosed, but I don't know the procedure and suspect it involves special equipment.

Nah, just reach down and grab the plug while it's running. If you aren't thrown across the garage your coil is bad! ;)

Looks like I got by cheap this time, with the exception of the $100 ODBII code scanner.

Replaced the spark plugs. they were all pretty worn, but not fouled.

Scratched some white crusties of the the contacts on the distributor cap.

One of those actions fixed it and it now runs like a new Nissan.

It's nice that technology has not bypassed the shade tree mechanic completely.
