Do you guys recommend a certain brand? OMC 4.3 Cobra outdrive. I am about to mount the outdrive back on the boat.

Re: Gasket sealant

If you only pulled the drive off, there is no gasket sealant needed anywhere.

Re: Gasket sealant

Come on what kind of comment is that. There are a few places in the manual I currently have (Seloc, still trying to find a deal on Ebay for the originals) that it simply states apply gasket sealant. It doesn't give a particular kind though and I just wanted to pose the question.

I wasn't kidding.

The drive pushes up against the ujoint boot and it isn't necessary to apply sealant there.

I am assuming you didn't take off the U-joint boot, right?

MD-80 did you ever try this source? I gave this to you in a different thread. For the original manuals try here....they had mine 1988 5.0L OMC Cobra!

Call them and make sure you have the model number off of the engine, the website is goofy and hard to navigate! I was refered to them by Bombadier. You can get Owners, Service and Parts Manuals and they are not copies or aftermarket. At least let me know if you tried or your not interested, beacuse you keep bring this up and I'm really trying to help you out.

Purduebarry, I am greatful for your link and I did try, I was just seeing if I could save a few bucks on get them on Ebay. I have seen them on there before but didn't grab them. If I can't find them soon though I will buy them from the source you gave me.

Yes I have taken off the ujoint bellows but I have bought bellows adhesive for that. I was thinking the main gasket that goes between the pivot housing and outdrive would need some sealant and maybe the o-ring that goes around the water inlet hose.

Re: Gasket sealant

I usually just use some grease to hold the o-ring in place for the water inlet hose.

I actually forgot about the gasket you mentioned. Volvo doesn't use that gasket with basically the same housing. The only reason to use sealant on that gasket is to keep water out of the shift cable cavity. Of course the water gets in there from the back anyway.

I though it could have been like mine. It has a huge o-ring that goes around the outside of the transom shield.......shows what I know, right?

Re: Gasket sealant

to answer your original question, i would recommend NOT using Permatex. Go to your boat store and Marina, and they will sell you a quality marine gasket sealant...just can't remember the name of the stuff I bought. Will post it if i do remember.

Re: Gasket sealant

The gasket sealer is available in a small can with a brush attached to the cap at any Johnson-Evinrude dealer under part #508235 for the small can called Gasket Sealiing Compound..

Mercuy also uses the same product that is named Perfect Seal #4.

On a Cobra drive use the sealer on the gasket, even though the later gaskets are supposed to be "self-sealing". You will spend all kinds of time scraping off the hardened sealer from that gasket residue. If you use the Gasket Sealing Compound, the outdrive gasket still seals, but will peal off easily when it comes time to remove the outdrive again.

On an SX Cobra drive that does not use a gasket, spread the gasket sealer on the face of the outdrive to prevent corrosion buildup between the bell housing and outdrive.

Re: Gasket sealant

MD-80...I know you have a 4.3 in a 91 boat boat but do you know for sure it's a 91 engine/drive? It's quite common for them to put a previous year power package in the boat. Check the last digits of the model number of the engine to determine the year. If it ends in PWC, PWR, PWS then you have a 1990 OMC. Searayman has lots of 1990 original OMC manuals but no 91's http://cgi.ebay.ca/1990-OMC-ENGINE-...3960980QQihZ002QQcategoryZ26453QQcmdZViewItem

Re: Gasket sealant

I've seen others on here recommend (and some online boat parts stores sell) Permatex Aviation Gasket Sealant as a suitable alternative. It sure looks like the OMC/ Merc stuff; small plastic bottle with a brush affixed to the inside bottle top.

Brown heavy liquid (almost like syrup) and it doesn't harden. Available at some auto parts stores.

Re: Gasket sealant

This really has me confused now. I asked about this a couple of months ago and got no response so I asked a couple of the mechanics at the dealership I buy parts from and they said they don't use it on the outdrive/pivot housing gasket. I had asked the parts guy at the same place a few years ago and he said the same thing. I didn't trust him and used it anyway and it has been so hard to remove that this time I took the advice of the mechanics and didn't use it.

Now that, combined with the re-using the outdrive mounting bolts question ( I always have and so did the shop before me) has me wondering if I should pull my outdrive back off and do it again.

Re: Gasket sealant

The thing is that there is no huge downside if it leaks slightly. The only thing it is really trying to prevent is getting water in the shift cable cavity which doesn't really work anyway. That is why OMC came out with a fitting that fills that cavity with grease.

I reuse my outdrive nuts 3 or 4 times before I change them out.
