supposed if one used a cobalt drill shank for a needle bearing replacement. what would be the consequences of it? it is .0003 smaller than the bearing itself. is it goin to fracture or will it be ok. is it to hard? it is for a connecting rod bearing in an outboard

Re: bearing question

Why not just replace the bearing?

What happens if that piece breaks and causes a whole lot of damage in the engine?

Re: bearing question

Surface finish on a needle bearing is much smoother than the surface finish on a drill shank. And yes the hardness could also be an issue.............................. Don't sound like a good go to me, but hay it's not my repair bill. ;)

Re: bearing question

Suppose the rod comes thru the case. That'll be what happens. Bet it won't last 60 seconds.

yeah, i found the origimal bearing while cleaning!!! ive used them before, but it wasnt in a connecting rod bearing. they did hold up. but i dont think it was that much pressure on it. but the reaon you dont replace it is, its 400 bucks for all of them. cant just buy one!!

Re: bearing question

why don't you just get the kit and replace them all. even if you had an extra one it might not work, those needles wear down evenly and putting a new one in with the old ones would not be good. you never said what size engine this is. if it were a little 5 hp job. you might get away with it..

Re: bearing question

Yep, surface and hardness are the key to any bearing
