Flo-torq II and XHS hub users.....

Some advice from Mercury Marine here...
As some have experienced a "clunking" noise when using this type of hub system, let it be noted that the torque values are much higher for these.
Where the engine manual calls for 55ftlbs of torque for normal hub props, the XHS and Flo-torq II require 100ftlbs of torque.
This may be some of the issues of noise at Idle that some of us have had. It has to smash into the plastic insert pretty hard to hold solid.
Hope this info helps some...

I don't think I am strong enough to torque to 100 ft pounds! I used to have to do that on my 'rude Fat-Fifty flywheel, and it nearly did me in!

How about a real question...is the plastic part of the XHS hubs replaceable, or do you need to buy the whole $30 brass and plastic hub?

Merc dealer or Michigan wheel corp....MWC's system is called the XHS system...same equipment though.
Check here at Iboats, they may have it here.

Crownie,

My Merc Midrange Service Manual for '97 up is right there.....55.

Kenny,

The Hustler I bought has one of those plastic and brass hubs. Looks to me like if you ever hit something you are going to rip brass and plastic out and have one big mess. Delrin is a pretty tough plastic, but not that tough.

And, at 100 ft-lbs of torque, you know nothing is gonna give when you shift gears. I can see how it should stand up to additional torque however.

Additionally, I don't see anything to "cushion the shift" when shifting gears like the rubber hub provides.

Funny, in rummaging through the "old-omc" site, I noticed where OMC featured the rubber hub to cushion shifting.......once they developed engines with gear shifters. d:)

The flo-torq III can be used in applications up to and including 175HP and is of a design that will reduce shock-load. I can't say that I like the straight Delrin hub...and you're right, Mark, I don't know what kind of mess it would be if you hit something.......Hummmmmm.......should I sacrifice an aluminum and find out???

Re: Flo-torq II and XHS hub users.....

I put on new 14.5x19x3 Flo-torq II on my boat, this spring. I know it is only torqued to around 50lbs. I haven't noticed any clunking, but will listen for it on next trip. I will also check the paperwork that came with it, but don't remember seeing that kind of torgue requirement or is this part of a service bulletin? Not going to get that kind of torque with one of those floating prop wrenches. :^ Also going to make removal more "fun".

It is specified right in the paperwork that comes in the kit, and this was also confirmed with my contact at Merc, the General manager of their propeller division. He says it usually takes the full 100ftlbs, maybe more, as long as the thrust washer bottoms out completely against the hub.

Re: Flo-torq II and XHS hub users.....

When I went fro an aluminum prop to a Rapture with the XHS hub the clunking was bad so I changed to an Apollo but I used a Flo torque II with it and it was alot better. Granted the Apollo is a smaller prop in my case.

But I can't wait to torque it doen to 100ft lbs and see if it goes away completly.

Thanks,
Scott
