Re: water pump change question

Gasket sealer is one I forgot about until I got to installing the new gasket under the impellor plate.....need that for the pump housing bolts, and gearcase bolts when you put them back in at the end too

Oh and if your shift shaft is coupled with two interlocking nuts behind the water intake like mine is (88' 25hp)..........try not to break the nylon shift shaft keeper when removing the top nut. It has to come off to get the lower unit off and for the shift shaft to slide through the pump housing etc...I broke mine taking it off an I had to order the part.

Thanks pony for the warning I will watch to not break it and mine connects that way also.

No other grease for anything needed just gasket sealer.

Re: water pump change question

Put a little grease on the driveshaft splines(Not on the top) when you put her back together. It will make it easier to remove next time and keep it from freezing up in the powerhead...

Yup like Rick says don't grease the top of the drive shaft, or else it may not seat properly......

May want to have a little omc triple gaurd grease(or comparable, I used Marine grease) handy for the new o-rings and seals.

You will need a little oil to coat the inside of the cup. I also coated my impellor with a little vaseline to make it easier to fit into the cup.

Rick, tell me if I'm crazy .

But, am I the only one who , installs new impeller, into housing .

Then put it on shaft, and align with the woodruff key.

At first, I thought , I'd try it like in the video.

But, I think I'll keep doing it the wrong way . LOL

KY- don't feel bad, I do it as you do. Intall into the housing the slip that onto the drive shaft....align for key.

Re: water pump change question

I went to take the keeper off of the shift rod and it was already broken :'( so I just bolted it back up the way it was and will get the part tomarrow or ordered tomarrow and shipped to me at lease. I will wait till I have the part in hand before I tear into it and this way I can still go fishing till I get the part

Re: water pump change question

I just yanked the lower unit and found the water pickup tube nipple ( where the brass tubs connects to the pump) on the waterpump is cracked and I had a hard time blowing through the tube right off the boat but now it seems free. Now the fun replacing the pump itself. Off to do that. Type back later

Re: water pump change question

Help I am missing :| the (part name) spacer that goes on top of the water pump housing on the outside goes over the shaft and into the top of the housing

What does this do? I cannot even see where it connects in the midsection of the motor.

Do you need this item?

Re: water pump change question

Are you talking about the black plastic piece.........that you get new o-rings for in a pump kit? I am not sure exactly what it does, but I know that it has to be on a certain way when you put the lower unit back on. I think it has someting to do with the spacing between the pump and the exhaust housing.

I was guessing 88 20hp when I did this, not sure what year you really have, but its part number BMC-0326692, and its about $6

Re: water pump change question

That is the part I do not have. I have to try to locate one tomarrow. The motor is a 1991 but has a older lower unit but they all have the same part number.

part number is 326693 long version. Ishop marine has then for $9.03 I beleive. I will try to get locally first but don't have much hope on that.

UPDATE
I cannot get the part locally so I have to order it. I found it at Ishopmarine. Anybody ever place a order from them?
