I have searched through the old post and couldn't find exactly my problem but om sorry if this is a repost.

I have a 77 Johnson 85hp model# 85ETLR77. As with most older outboards it's cold natured, I have to let the motor warm up a minute or two before it will idle, But what my problem is when I put it in gear it runs ok and idles ok but when I put under full throttle it seems like its running only on 2 cylinders or or its flooding the carb or something....But after leaving in full throttle for 30 seconds or so it picks up and runs great plains out, I can slow down or troll and shift back into full throttle it and it does the same thing .. It does this every time when it's hot or cold. could it be a timing problem or carb problem.

It sound's like a carb problem. Mostly with the low speed, or pick-up circuit.

Would a carb kit take care of this?

2 carb kits might - that's what you will need.

The motor needs thermostats if you want it to run another 30 years.

Kits alone won't fix them. They need a good cleaning. Do a search on carb cleaning.

I'd also make sure the timer base under the flywheel is not binding up. Have someone move the throttle slowly from neutral to wide open while you observe the timer base and see if it moves smoothly without hanging up..

jall

you came to the right place, these guys are real helpful and will steer you in the right direction!
I just rebuilt my first outboard carbs on Friday, and they are really simple. One thing that did surprise me is that they didnt come with any instructions (OMC kits), but I had my service manual. So if you dont have a manual you might want to pick one up or maybe check the library? I just wanted to mention that pictures are always helpful during reassembly!d:)

Thanks to all, I am going to get a manual tomorrow as well as a carb kit. It cant be much wrong with it.. when it kicks in it pushes my 15 foot bass boat at 40 mph and runs smooth its just the initial get going. eske said I need 2 kits.. can I ask why? or just need some extra gaskets that dosent come in the one

I think they are assuming it is a 4 cylinder and it has two carbs on it, one on top of the other. Just asked who ever you buy the kit from if it covers both carbs or look at it and see it there is two of everything.

You have 2 two-barrel carbs. The kit is for 1 carburetor.
