no gas to carb

Hi just some quick suggestions - I'm in the process of repairing a 74 9.9 evinrude. I've got lots of spark and compression is fine. I believe it has the 15 hp carb in it. The engine burps but there is no gas getting to the carb. I'll take out the carb (novice) what should I look for?

Welcome to iboats!

Disconnect the fuel line from the carb. Put this line into a tin can. Squeeze the primer bulb, does fuel squirt into the can? If yes, then pull the rope start, does fuel squirt into the can? If yes, replace fuel line to carb.
You have determined that the fuel pump is working and the fuel is being delivered to the fuel pump and carb.

If the motor burps, it's getting some amount of fuel, but perhaps not enough. Try spraying a bit of fuel mix (gas/oil mix) directly into the carb throat with a spray bottle. Pull rope start. Does motor run for a few seconds? If yes, you have a fuel blockage in the carb. Remove carb. Clean with spray carb cleaner followed with compressed air in all openings and passages. Install carb kit. Remount carb.

BTW, replacing the 9.9 carb with a 15hp model is going to be a problem. The 15hp carb throat is larger than the original 9.9 carb throat and will tend to flood the motor.

hi - cleaned carb and replaced fuel line (it had a hole) Still only burps. Should you be able to feel compression in the crankcase by putting your finger where the fuel pump bolts in? I can't feel anything in order to run the fuel pump. Thanks - your last suggestions were very helpful to a newbie like myself.

The easiest way to test the fuel pump is , I suggested before, is to remove fuel line to carb. Place fuel line into a can. Squeeze primer bulb and verify fuel is going through pump and into can. Next , pull start rope and verify fuel being pulsed into can.

Did you do these steps?? What did you observe.?

Rebuilding the fuel pump with a kit can be a daunting task. Lots of small parts and sometimes confusing instructions. In your case, just replace the fuel pump with new. It's a simple 2 bolt install and 2 fuel lines.

Beg your pardon, Xcusme, I'd encourage pb to do the rebuild...unless these that mount directly to the crank are way different from the ones with the vacuum line...it's just the housing, a couple gaskets, diaphram, spring and the little plunger thingy...don't loose the spring when you dismantle it...you'll need gasket cleaner & gasket sealer...what am I missing?

whoa, mine didn't have nearly that many parts! 'course my manual says it's not a serviceable pump replace the whole thing...I just used a kit from the next earlier year - good thing I didn't have the instructions!

Re: no gas to carb

Ok - gas now getting to the carb but not to the plugs - I've cleaned the carb earlier (Maybe not well enough?) and blown compressed air throughout. Could the reed valves be the problem? Happy to be movin along - Thanks again.

Ok, ...did you use the spray bottle with fuel mix as I suggested?

Are you getting spark to the plugs?

Re: no gas to carb

When it does momentarily fire - very rough -then quits. On a hunch I'm going to try fresh gas and new plugs - there seems to be some debate on which type - the motor lists champion L7J - should I go out and purchase NGK BR7HIX's? The motor is progressing :)

If you want it to keep progressing, make sure you keep the champions in there,..........

When it is momentarily firing, Is it from premix shot into the carb via a spray bottle, or just normal starting??

Re: no gas to carb

What champions? - UL81C were recommended at the nearest parts store- the motor was given to me with autolite plugs which I've never used before. IF rudes run better with champs then thats the way I'll go. Thanks again

Re: no gas to carb

champion UL-81C is correct...gap .030...and definately no NGK in your OMC. Fresh gas is an excellent idea.

next step, link & sync.

check that...order a manual first...get the factory shop manual available from marineengine.com or kencook.com

Re: no gas to carb

Thanks for all the help - almost ready to take the motor out on its maiden voyage - should the water pump spray on start up - it doesn't seem to spray until the engine warms? Once warm - water seems to spray normally. Also -What type of compression readings should I be expecting on this motor?
