+o(+o(I've been trying to research OMC outboards. Ole Evenrude, Mr. Straton, the Johnson bros.. lost their shirt trying to race the Wankel, broken up and piece mealed out.
So.... by the 60s, a Evanrude was a Johnson was an OMC? Just different decals? A looper is a looper? Parts are parts, mix & match?
Thanks for clarificatiob if needed.

Re: OMC confusion

It's a lot like GM...different mfg. divisions, similar basic product sharing a lot of the same parts, to a degree. Is a Chevy same as a Buick or Oldsmobile or Pontiac? Yes and no. Evinrude and Johnson were separate entities. Ole started Evinrude and sold it, but came back as ELTO (Evinrude Light Twin Outboard) cause he couldn't legally use the sold Evinrude name. When Johnson/Evinrude merged, they became OMC (Outboard Motor Corporation) and if this isn't already confusing enough they made badged motors such as Sea King, Sea Bee, etc. in the Gale Mfg. division for companies like Mont. Wards, Goodyear and Atlas Tire. All very similar but slightly different. So, not all parts are interchangeable...only a good Evinrude/Johnson parts guy can tell you which ones interchange cause there are differences.

Just a nit pick. I think OMC was Outboard Marine Corp.

Re: OMC confusion

d:)Thank you. I'm just being cautious( anal retentive??) about buying twin OMC motors. I;ve been assured the design is one of the best, but now I'm wondering about parts/repair. I'm NIT a lucky person.

I don't have to gamble, when I wake up in the morning, I've already lost money!:'(

JB - they were Outboard Motors Corp, first, then as they grew they became Outboard Marine Corp... I think that was in the 1960s...

Re: OMC confusion

OMC went belly up a few years ago and have since been owned by Bombarier. And by the way, they have the most technologically advanced engines on the market under the Evinrude name. Johnson is still being marketed as well. All Evinrude engines are currently very high-tech two strokes under the E-tec name.

Re: OMC confusion

This may be of passing interest to someone out there. For a continuos number of year through the eighties and nineties (and possibly the sixties and seventies but that was before my time of experience) when you ordered parts for a Johnson or Evinrude motor you used the same parts book. There was only one parts book and it was titled Johnson/Evinrude Parts or something like that, so yes, so the motors were exactly the same. The only exception to this were the motor covers (and any other part which might have the Johnson or evinrude name on it) which needed to have different decals or insignia. I don't know when this changed for I moved on to other pastures. Again, for many years, keeping in mind the exception of the motor covers, the motors were exactly the same.

ted655....what motors are you buying, year and HP? I wouldn't worry about finding parts and service for OMC's, I would bet that parts and people to install them are the easiest to find for OMC over almost all other outboards, except maybe for Mercury, but with one of them you'll be looking for parts and service more often.

JB, you're right! I owned stock in OMC in the 60's and indeed it was Outboard Marine Corp., NOT Outboard Motor Corp. Us old guys gotta stick together!

Re: OMC confusion

Just a thought because you stated buying OMC.If it is a Johnson or an Evinrudego ahead..If it is an OMC outboard,it maybe a Seadrive,or a Quiet Rider. Some shops won't want to work on the Seadrive, and I never saw a Quiet Rider until last week. And they were made 1991 thru 1994,evidently.

Maybe not spectacular problems, but I'm too busy too work on either one,as I don't have time to explore them. I also have found no repair manuals for the Quiet Rider, nor parts manuals for Seadrives.

Just my humble opinion.

Re: OMC confusion

:$ Wish I knew what year, older I'm sure. I will later this week when the guy comes in from fishing. They are dual 70 hp. "OMC" outboard motors.
Every search I do reverts to Evenrude/Johnson, bla, bla, bla. Thats OK with me, BUT.... later, I just don't want some mech. to shake his head & say, "Oh, this is a OMC, can't help ya sonny!." Then I run across something like this, which may or may not be important to me.
"Suzuki Motor Corp. will begin supplying outboard motors this fall to Outboard Marine Corp. (OMC) of the U.S. on an OEM basis, company officials said Tuesday. The firm plans to supply a total of about 10,000 two-cycle and four-cycle engines a year. It hopes the contract will improve the production utilization ratio of its outboard motor operations."
See, I don't get Merc & Mariner &Cristler/ Force, Nisson/Tohats either. Hell if you make it, then put your name on it and stop playing games
I just don't get words like, "just like" or "made by". If it's a can of fish soup, then don't add another buck & call it boulabaise.d:)d:)
