Re: 72 25hp flywheel pulling tool?

Thanks for the replys and info!!!

Ok, so using the harmonic balancer puller ...

I use that to break the flywheel loose then I can just unscrew the bolt on top. That sound right?

Ive worked on similar situations on a vehicle but not boat motors, and the way the pics looked I thought it was a special tool (has a bar to hold onto).

Thanks for all your help!!

That's the sort I use. But if you can get the beefy Lisle or other ones. That one doesn't have a lot of meat to it. May be OK for the 25hp but the bigger one will handle any one.

You'll need to pick up three 1/4"-20tpi bolts about 3" long to go with it. Get grade 8 if you can. That particular size never seems to come with those pullers.

Yeah paul, I've run into the same problem with the bolts.
I'm gonna head up to lowes and try to find the bolts you've described. Hopefully they'll have what I need.

Thanks ever so much for the exact spec!!

Would you or anyone happen to know where or what I should use to hold the flywheel in place while I'm taking this piece off?

The flywheel (whole piece) moves freely and I dont have any resistance.

Thanks a bunch guys!!

Re: 72 25hp flywheel pulling tool?

If you've got the flywheel with the starter ring, I would think about when you have to retorque the wheel. Here's what you can do:

Pick up a couple bolts that fit the starter ring, but are about 1/2" longer or so than the ones that are in it (1/4"-20 thread again). Then remove a couple nearby bolts from the starter ring and bolt a metal "handle" to it using the longer bolts. If you don't want to drill the handle for the bolts, you can just wedge it between the two.

Another idea that works on smaller engines is to make a handle that fits the puller bolt holes.

Thanks for the info Paul!!

Got it off today and guessing right It looks like the points are gunky. Not to mention one of them is actually resting point to point with no gap.

Gonna try to look around the parts pages and hopefully find out what type of points I need to get.

Thanks a bunch for all your help!!!
Its VERY much appreciated!!

A large strap wrench works fairly well for keeping it in place while torquing the nut.
