I hear a whining sound which I suspect might be the water pump going bad. I set out out to replace the impeller but am having trouble dropping the lower unit.

I have removed the four bolts and the nut under the zinc trim tab. The lower unit will drop about an inch but them appears to restrained from further movement. I suspect it might be the gear shift linkage. Any ideas?

The engine is from 2003. It is 4 cycle EFI. Serial number OT805459.

Thanks!

Hi X

There will be a shift linkage connector(either a screw or pin) you need to disconnect. I am not familiar with that particular model, so I can't advise where it is. Others should know more...

Thanks, there was a a horizantal pin connecting the top of the shift rod with the shift cam. There is a plastic piece that needs to be pushed up and then to the side to disengage the pin from the shift rod. It is hard to access. I had to remove the cowls but I suspect it can be done with cowls in place once one knows what to do.
