From the compression test readings it dosnt sound like it needs a rebuid :/ Ive had outboards that run with 80 - 90 and they run just fine.130 Is really good compression. Id take your head off just in case and take a look at cyclinder 4 see whats going on inside but from the compression readings you dont need a rebuild... at least top end rebuild... It could be knocking for all i know

I agree. I would take it elsewhere for a second opinion...Why is it in the shop?

Lemme tell you a secret: I don't know your gender, but it is a lot easier to rip off a man than a woman. Why? Because the woman will ask questions and want to see the parts. A man is too proud or ego to admit his ignorance and will just go along with anything they say. Go look at the motor and demand an explanation as to what's wrong and why. Take someone with you that knows beans if you have to. 1psi is not enough difference to warrant rebuild unless something else is wrong.

ok talked to them again i was wrong on compression 130 in three and 119in #4 said he looked through the spark plug hole and could see meteal shavings inside and that is looked scored. here is a little history just bought the boat and the #4 carborator ws spitting some gas out of it we took it out on the lake and it ran perfect for 2 days on third day we were going along at about wot and it just died started right back up got up to wot and died agagin got back to marina and pulled plugs #4 seemed fouled put new spark plugs in and ran ok after that except for rough idle and slow speed. more advise welcomed for i really dont know what to do .

Your symptoms and the wrench's diagnosis do not match.

Compression is well within OMC's 15% spec.

Did the wrench show you what he was talking about?

Take it somewhere else and get a second opinion. I think you are getting a snow job.

Re: Need advice PLZ(asap)

No change. Go look at it and demand to know what happened and why. It would be stupid to rebuild it without knowing what caused the damage in the first place....might just happen again. It's not that big a deal to remove the cylinder head and intake bypass cover so you can see inside to see what gave way. They don't just blow up by themselves.

ok great advise everyone thank you,
if there is metal shavings inside does that mean a rebuild? i thought compression would be worse if it was ready for a rebuild

Re: Need advice PLZ(asap)

Two ideas or thoughts for you.

A V4 will NOT quit running with one cylinder down.It will run rough, but won't stop running. So something else is wrong besides your compression/metal exchange.

If the shop looked at the plugs as they pulled them out,(and they should have),maybe #4 plug was 'silvery' indicating metal loss going on inside that cylinder.Even though compression was close.

I'd learn more before I went for that second opinion. What if they say something entirely else ? Get a third opinion ?

At this point I would stick with #1,have them pull that head, and show you the damage they say you have. Probably another 30 minutes of labor on your bill.

Compression would be like 60 Psi if you need a rebuild not 119, It dosnt need a rebuild. take it some where else and get a second opinion

Oh,not knowing what you know about motors, you can visually compare the two cylinders under that head.Piston top should look the same as well as the top outside diameter of the pistons.NO grooves should be in the cylinder walls.

Re: Need advice PLZ(asap)

Compression is governed mainly by the condition of the rings and cylinder walls. Here is a possible scenario: A bearing cage on a connecting rod breaks. Pieces of it manage to get thru the bypass ports without wiping out the rings. Gets all beat to heck in the combustion chamber before finally being expelled out the exhaust ports. No matter, the engine still has to be completely torn down to fix the bearing. It must be at least inspected properly, not just peek through the spark plug hole. I have no idea what the condition of your motor is, so go find out.
