Here it is:
come-along_and_waterpump.jpg

It took all of my strength to crank on that come-along to get that thing out. What ended up happening was that the entire gearbox came out. I wish i'd realized that it could all come out before this. Now I still have to split the water pump shaft from the gear shaft itself. Any pointers on this?

Was I crazy for doing this?

I'm sure your problem is sealant... somebody went crazy the last time the impeller was changed.

I would try a stiff putty knife, grind an edge into the end. Try working it around the seam, maybe lightly tapping with a small hammer appying heat will help soften the sealant.

I cant see your picture good enough but are you trying to get the impeller off of the shaft???If so ,you should take a chisel with a good edge and hammer it down until it splits or take a dremmel and very carefully cut a split in it.You dont want to dremmel the shaft.Clean it up very good with sand paper or emery cloth and test fit the new impeller. It should slide on and off the shaft with ease.If it does not then you need to find where it is hanging up and sand or dremmel it smoothe. After you do this make sure you put plenty of marine grease on the shaft and inside the impeller .Charlie

wow, you are pulling crooked with that rig.... looks dangerous.
IIRC, the vertical gear and bearing housing can be quite easily pushed down and out out from the top, no?. Just need to pop the top cover off (nothing holds it on except the exhaust hsg) and look in.

Re: What I had to do to remove my water pump.

Hey guys,
Internet's been up and down at my house for days so I've not been able to update.
The picture is of me attempting to pull the drive shaft up and out of the housing so I can replace the impeller and drive shaft. What ended up happening is that the whole assembly popped out - with the drive shaft still inserted into the other shaft. So now I have the gears and everything out of the upper unit housing. Problem is, I still can't get the drive shaft apart to pull the water pump.
I tried REALLY hard and finally I took the thing to a machine shop yesterday. They said they would do their best on it and to call on Monday.
Believe me, this is ridiculous. I've never had a part that refused to budge in this manner. Wanna know the worst of it? The impeller looks fine - all this after I bent the metal plate up to attempt to wedge it out.
However, the impeller housing was completely filled with some sort of whitish correosion (probably from salt water) that I think was preventing water flow.
In any case, I did check on ebay for a complete upper unti but don't see one for a reasonable price ($500-$600) that fits my machine (120 hp 400 stringer).
This thing seems like a breeze to rebuild IF you can get it apart.
Wish me luck, guys, and if anyone happens to have a good upper unit, send me an email: matt at beachbum dot net.

Thanks.

So, let me see if I understand... the water pump driveshaft is stuck in the upper unit drive shaft?

Hard to understand your previous posts.

So... what would be the effect of using an Upper unit from an 800 instead of replacing the same one I have?

There matched sets you will need to stick with 400 parts

It is amazing how corrosion can bond things.
When I rebuilt my jet drive, the impeller had to be removed from the drive shaft. It's a tapered fit (not pressed) with a keyway. I could not budge it on my press (10,000lbs) so I took it to my buddy's machine shop and used his press. It did eventually break free - at 43,000lbs. Wiped off the same white corrosion with a rag and it would slide on and off with ease. Good luck!

Wow, that sucks Matt. That drive has not had an impeler change in a long while.

If yiu have a 400, you'll need an upper from a 400. 800's are different shafts.
