hi all,
just found this site, as i am having trouble with a couple of outboards decided to see if someone can help me, and this site looked very good.

at the moment i am working on a johnson 20 RL 73A, because the lower end got trashed, stripped its lower pinion, and sheared its driveshaft, not only that but the gear case was without oil, so i am in the process of rebuilding, and hsve come to a screaming halt.

i am trying to change the oil seal that is located in the seaward end of the gearcase head assembly, in the parts book it shows it as a single unit, however the workshop manual shows it with a oil seal and o-ring, and in the text it simply states that

remove the seal from the gearcase head and discard the o-ring

hmmmmm, yes, well, reads nice and simple, but heres the rub, how the devil do you get to it, on inspection, it looks as if the only way to get to it, is to take the bronze bearing/bush outon the inboard end but it all seems as though its a sealed unit,

basically HELP

thanks

Re: gearcase head assembly

Welcome aboard voith!

Yep....poses a problem. The seal head and bushing was sold as an assembled unit up until 79. But....look at the top of the seal. Should be a printed number on it....six digits. The seal is replaceable.

I use a manual seal puller....one of those double hook thingys for pulling seals. I chuck it lightly up in a vice....just so it won't pull out, and use the puller CAREFULLY so the edges of the head arent' damaged. I'll use a piece of wood under the puller to keep it from laying against the edge of the head. If you work carefully, the seal will come out. Can't tell you right off the top of my head the number of the seal....but again, it should be printed on the seal.

EDIT: By the by.....the head assembly is still available from your local J/Rude dealer for a mere $116.72......work carefully........d:)

Re: gearcase head assembly

hi obj,
thanks for your reply, as my one is a 73 maybe its on of those all in one jobbys then, as i can see the seal but it is inside the case of the assembly, it looks like it is put in from the bush end and buts up to the outer end, and then the bush is put in after and sealed in
thanks

Re: gearcase head assembly

I've never heard of one like you make yours out to be. Wonder just what the heck you have found??? The seal should go in (and out) from the outer end. The bronze bushing is cast in place and does not come out. There was a special tool for pulling the seal out, but if you don't have one you'll just have to do the best you can with whatever you have. Good luck
