Will a lower unit from a 87 mercury 70hp. work on my 94 115 mercury. They both look the same but need other input from members.

Apples and oranges. Look closer; if the years you mention quite noticably different in appearance. I had an '89 115 and had it at the dealer when the new engines came out (where 115 went from 6 cyl to 4 cyl) and the lower units were noticably different and seemed to be of a different size.

Easy to tell, prior to the new design, to remove the propshaft, you have to remove the prop and unscrew a thin nut that was about 4" in diameter. In the new design, there are 2 external screws just above and below the bulge where the prop fits and removing these two screws allows the prop shaft to be removed.

They look identical. the prop fits, and the top and bottom screws are in the same location.

Man you just blew me away.

Ok let's go:

1. Drive shaft has to mesh
2. Shift shaft has to mesh
3. Water tube from water pump has to seat in seal in bottom of powerhead.
4. Bolts have to line up to bolt it together.

Crank it up on muffs.

Got water out pee tube and out prop exhaust.

When at idle shifts thru F N R (giving it time to settle down before shifting to another gear).

Put it in F and goose it (stay away from prop).....prop spins freely engine takes throttle freely.

Man if you pass the above, take her to the water and go!

But the numbers are in error somewhere as the old and new don't look the same.....never tried to marry them however.
