2002 Dodge Durango.

I have some problems with my ac unit.

After work one day (mid 90's) I started the vehicle up and turned on the air, cooled down nicely during my 40 minute drive home, I shut the vehicle down and went inside....I was inside for maybe 10 minutes at the most, started the vehicle up and noticed it wasnt cooling like it just previously did...It was almost like a half warm, half cool really humid feeling air coming out.....Upon my return home (10 minute trip max) it still wasnt cooling the same. When I turn the vehicle off and opened the door, I smelled smoke, like something was burning.I immediatly open the hood and you could tell the smell was coming from under the hood, but couldnt see any smoke or tell where it was coming from.(It had a smell more like burnt rubber, more then burning fluid,IE oil or antifreeze)....I let the truck set for about 1 hour and decided to test it again, this time the air ran great.....Fast forward 2 weeks and while on vacation during a hot day I tried to turn the air on again....This time it started to cool, and then stopped and the air got humid again...I finally said screw it and gave up trying to use the air and drive with the windows down.....Now 1 week later I decide to drop it off at the dealer as my warranty expires at 70,000 miles and Im sitting about 400 short of that mark and the air is back working good again....
I have scheduled an appt with the dealer to drop the vehicle off as they couldnt get me a loaner car until this coming up week....

With the problem being sporadic(sp?)and only works when it wants to, I can see the dealer saying they cant find anything wrong, and then 2 months down the road after my warranty expires then it will finally kick the bucket and my pocket book.....Any ideas or something I can check myself?

Make them list it as a exsisting problem on the work ticket and have them list as a exsisting problem that they can't find, then call Chrysler customer service and ask them about your options and they should take care of the problem. Get the persons name that you speak to for later verifacation if need be, just asking for their name when giving them your information will usally help your cause a lot, everyone has supervisiors and don't need them to know that they have not been doing thier job and that is what customer service at factory level is about--Bob

Sounds like your ac belt is slipping under maximum load
or the ac pump is on its way out.

I'm with puddle. Sure sounds like the belt is worn and grabbing the pully when it feels like it. Heard any squeaking lately? 4 years, so it's due for a replacement belt anyway...

The cut out switch could be going bad. It cuts the ac off when you accelerate so you are not robbed of power. Not too essential with a v-8 but in a 4 cyl it helps. I have seen those cut out switches go bad. Isn;t the fan belt on the 02 durango a serp belt? Those usually do not slip.

Demand the ac clutch be tested, the cut out switch and have the entire system checked and yes documented.

Maybe the heater core is freezing up. That would explain the intermittent problem.

Just a thought.

Re: AC problems in the auto....

Well just posting a followup.....The dealer had the truck done by 10 am....Naturally as expected they couldnt find anything wrong with the a/c...In the print up sheet they gave me it says....."Recalibrated H-Vac system and inspected for leaks-Found none.Performed tersts on evap temp sensor-Cools to 32.5 degrees and clutch cycles at that point.Checked operating of A/C system and is not freezing up at this time.Road tested system is operating as designed""

So exactly as I figured would happen, since its intermittent problem they wont be able to find anything wrong....I got everything in writing...

I also had 2 small hoses that go to some Coal cartridge or something associated with the gas, that was giving me a check engine light....They say they ran a smoke test to find the leak....

So basically 2 small hoses, and diagnostics on the check engine light, and diagnostics on the A/C that they cant find anything wrong with, and I walk away $190 less in my pockets.

Im in the wrong field of work.

Im planning on calling Chrysler on monday to see what can be done with maybe an extension on my A/C warranty or something.

Put a new belt on it before it breaks and causes more problems!

Unless the belt got wet and it slipped during your "episode", indications are clearly of belt problems. If it smelled enough to get your attention, the slipping damaged the belt in a spot that the mechanic didn't see.
Save yourself some grief. Might take you all of 15 minutes to replace it yourself!
