How can it run with the test prop but not with real prop

I thought I had solved my engine problems in the "screwed again thread but I guess not.

Walker was right about the recirc valves. The engine will now start, idle, and rev up in gear with the test prop.

I put the same 14x19 prop back on that worked so well before but the motor won't do more than 3000 rpm now.

Help

My air motor housing was cracked so I replaced it with a fuel only pump.

The really sad thing is I'm right back where I started when I first registered with iboats 2 years ago. Same problem again. Can't get WOT. The first time it was a frozen timer base and timing issues. I checked it's movement and the timing but that's not it. (I think).

I've followed your thread too. Good luck.

Surely you do have the propeller thrust washer in there ---don't you?

What kind of rpm do you get with the test wheel?

5k, but it surges up and down a few hundred rpm and the tach is erratic.

It does rev up a lot higher with the test wheel than it does with the prop.

I'll understand if everyone is sick of my boat problems. 2 years of constant posts have probably worn everyone out. I never had so many problems with a motor as I have had with this one. I tried to contact iboats about a new one, but they didn't get back to me.

I assume you had the correct test wheel. What does the manual say the test wheel rpm's should be?

Also was the lower unit completely submerged?

Hi Alden

I don't think everyone is tired of the problems, but I think most are running out of advice. You've covered alot of ground with repairs you've made and advice you've followed with limited results. I'm hoping that Dale has something in mind by asking how it did with the wheel on there. Lets wait and see....I feel for you....Hang in there..

EDIT: Now that's a coincidence........Nice timing Dhadley..

I don't remember the Part # off the top of my head, but it is for sure the one called for in the book. I used it this spring to set the MSA and it worked great.. I seem to remember the book said to run at 4500 with the wheel to set the timing.

The lower was submerged.

With the compression #'s I have I don't think this motor has many hours on it. It was a 1990 that was only used till '96. I find it hard to believe that this thing is worn out from use. I'm really starting to think it's just a lemon. I've seen it with cars. No matter who does what, it just won't fix.

I know of no other place that has such helpful and friendly motor experts that help for free. I am grateful for all the effort that has been put forth.

Yes, the timing should be set at 4500 or so. The timer base will be at the stop then. The manual will call for a certian test wheel on a given motor to reach a given rpm. If the motor can't reach that rpm then we have to find out why. If the motor does reach that rpm then the basic motor and it's operating systems are OK.

What did the manual call for and what did the motor get to?
