DON S --> I have the readings from my ELECTRIC CHOKE

Just to review my problem... I have been having a hard time starting when on the water... When I removed my flame arrestor and tried starting that way, it seemed a little easier... This prompted attention to the electric choke and the possibility that it may be broken...

As per Don S the OHM readings are as follows:
When the engine is running: 1.2
When the leads are disconnected: 8.06
When the leads are connected: 7.55

This is at a 20k setting on the multimeter...
Hopefully I did it right...
I would appreciate any help on the matter...

Re: DON S --> I have the readings from my ELECTRIC CHOKE

I noticed that the choke was fully closed on the carb when I went to the boat this morning, and the electric choke was set 2 notched towards the richer side... I adjusted the choke to: 2 noctches toward the leaner side, this left the choke slightly open. Then I started the engine, I noticed that the choke started to open as the engine got warmed up, but eventually after the engine fully warmed up, the choke was only halfway open... So, I said "since it was summer," I just adjusted the choke to the leanest setting, and tightened it back up... I figure I would adjust or replace the choke, if I found that it was easier for me to start up on the water...

Thanks

Did this adjustment affect the way the boat started, better or worse ?

You were supposed to measure the voltage between the two leads you took off the choke coil and the ohms of the choke coil itself.

Is that what you did?

OK, thanks for the response, I just bought this Multimeter on Monday, and this is what I did...

I turned the dial to 20 on the V side and measured all the leads there...

If I took any measurements in the Omega sector of the meter (which I assume is the Ohm side) then it would just read as zero.

Please excuse the ignorance...

REEL POOR: When I am at the dock, and I let the engine get hot... I can always easily start right back up... (kinda' weird) BUT !! If I'm out on the water, and I fish for approx. 20 minutes... It becomes difficult to start... Gosh, I am begining to believe it has something to do with the rockiness... HOWEVER, when I am at the dock, I always have the engine cover OPEN, which reinforces a choke problem...

Wouldn't this be easier if I just bought another choke?
The thing kinda' looks cheap to buy?

I asked for ohms readings on the automatic choke coil. Mostly to see if the coil was even workable. That is done with no power on the system. That is how ohms are checked.
I never asked to check running, etc, with the meter set on the ohms scale when the system has power on it. That's a good way to destroy a meter.
You can't test things if you don't know how to use the equipment necessary to make the tests.

The resistance reading you took, ohms, tells you there are no opens in the choke coil, starting the engine and watching the choke open tells you there is voltage at the coil leads. You can verify by disconnecting the leads, turn on the ignition, key on engine off, and you should read battery voltage across those two wires. The halfway open means the bi-metal spring thats being heated is fatigued and will no longer go it's full travel or it is not connected inside to the spring. Take the choke cover off and take a look. The spring and choke butterfly linkage should mate properly. It will be obvious how they mate. If it is properly assembled, replace the choke coil, reset it cold. Just closed and a notch richer, and run it. It's a pretty simple concept....
