Long distance sound in a non-sound-polluted environment.

I have often bragged of the peace of The Hideout.

How is this:

Was out on the front porch for a smoke. Quiet as usual. Then I distinctly heard thunder from the west. I listened for a while to be sure it wasn't my imagination. Could see the very tops of anvil clouds right on the horizon. Yup, I thought; thunderstorms to the west, but how far?.

Came in and turned on the HDTV to local weather RADAR. The storms are north of Abilene, about 100 miles away.

I heard the liftoff of a Saturn 5C from about thirtry miles away and I have read that elephants' subsonic rumblings are read by other elephants many miles away, but this is the most dramatic demonstration I have experienced of the travel of low frequency sound. I think in a sound polluted environment I wouldn't have heard it at all.

I'm deaf as a post, and would.nt have heard it if it was five miles away, but i certainly do feel it in my joints when a storm is approaching.

Very true JB.
We have looked to the sky's at night with a telescope and saw very little (in the city). Drove out to my MILs cabin only a hour away on the same night and the sky's were crystal clear.
Same thing with sound.
Here a person can slam a door shut 300 feet away and I won't hear it.
At the cabin a deer 300 feet away will get off her bed and start comming up the hill and you hear almost every foot step.

I find stuff like this fascinating. We live in a more rural area, not as rural as the Hideout by any means, but I know one thing for sure, I will move closer to the city. I love being able to go outside, look up and see the stars, listen and only hear the crickets.

This isn't really related to sound, but we were on the lake a couple weeks ago when a storm came across the water. The lake I boat on is long and skinny, kind of like a finger lake. We were on one end of the lake and I saw the storm approach from the other end. The rain was a bit harder and looked like a big mass of fog approaching. It was worth my boat getting soaked to see the storm approach like that.

Well, here in the sticks is kinda like that. You can go outside and hear all kinds of things that I am sure you would not hear closer to the city.
Wouldn't trade it for nothing.

Thats how it is at my farm. During the full moon you lay outin the pasture on your back and look up, it is simply amazing what God has put here for us to enjoy.

Well..... the Green Mountains here in VT tend to quell those noises however, I do appreciate what you are saying.

Our mountains have their own way when it comes to noise - they absorb it!

The same for light.

With so much ambient light at night we never get to see the meteor showers.

We also live where we can enjoy the sounds of silence. :p

This is also one of the reasons I love the offshore boating so much. The lack of noise and the star filled night sky is just awsome.

All I can hear is the neighbor's air conditioner. :/

I'm thinking pretty hard about renting out my house and movin' out into the sticks. I spent most of today looking at property out in red neck country. Not sure if I can live without broadband...:^

ZMOZ I live 90 miles from the nearest big city in a town of 20K, all the benys of semi-rural and within an hour of a Bass Pro Shop. I called the city that we moved to before we moved to ensure they had cable modem ( I work for a company in Florida from home and have to have it) You may be able to find the same info with a few phone calls.

Just cant beat the fact that you can sleep with the windows open and not be awoken by sirens all night

We have wireless broadband here. Only had it for about a year.

Prior to that I was on dial-up for 6 years. :(
