Questions...

Do I need a battery hooked up to make the engine run?

I have asked before...but I cannot get it to spark at the plug, and someone said I need to isolate the two black wires under the flywheel...I am not sur which wires they are...is there an easier way to jump around the switch (I have no key) or is there something in the box (where the silly-noid and wires are) that I can jump???

so, basically...is the ingnition system electronic...point...what???

Thanks
Jason

The ignition is a magneto, it does not need an outside power source. Those two wire's coming out of the mag. plate have knife connector's under a rubber sleeve. These are the kill, or ground wires'. If you disconnect these two wires', and crank over the engine, and you don't have spark, the problem is under the flywheel. If you do have spark. the problem is in the harness from the engine to the control box. A wiring diagram would certainly help. If you are cranking that engine over with no key, such as at the solinoid, you would have no spark as the switch is in the ground, or off position, assuming every thing is wired up.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you should be able to unplug the wiring harness from the junction box and start the motor manually. Stopping it is another thing. Choking usually works. The ignition switch on my 75 hp needed work on the weekend so took it out and used the pull start until I got it fixed.

well then, assuming it is wired right...couldn't I just unplug all the wires from the main dash switch and see if I get spark?

Sure, but that won't eliminate problems with the wiring between the outboard & keyswitch, vacuum cutout switch, kill switch on the engine (if present), etc.
Should be easy to do like R.Johnson says. Easier than pulling the wires off the keyswitch. Just open the knife disconnects or pull the lead off the vacuum cutout switch.

:D
If it's a big deal then try the keyswitch. But if that doesn't cure it find those knife disconnects.
