Anyone had this problem? My dads 150 vmax trim/tilt quit working and looks like the seal around one of the smaller lifts is damaged due to it grinding on the motor.

Called dealer who told him fluid is contaminated with water because it is a dark blackish color.

QUES.
How hard is it to replace seals and housing and how do you flush out the contaminated fluid?
Thanks,
var007

how did the seal contact the motor? is the trim limit pin in place ?
find another dealer.
the oil is dark due to overheating and rubber contamination.
water contamination will turn the oil milky.
the seals are easy to change but require the proper spanner to remove the caps.
but to properly fush it will requiure dissasembling the unit.

Hey, rodbolt.

Thanks for reply.

Not sure about trim limit pin, where is it located?
Is the cap torqued real tight or can it be loosened without special tool? vice grip or strap wrench?

It looks to me like the engine stop has been bottoming out on the lft hand ram cap and the vibration has been wearing into the threaded housing cap and has already worn into the seals. About a 1/4 inch deep groove.
Dealer said not under any warranty due to age of engine, 6yrs. and has never heard of or seen this problem before.

First noticed trim not working sometime then got worse and worse till nothing... but trim motor is working.

I think some fluid has leaked out then fluid over heated even though it came out when reservoir cap removed.
I would attempt to fix, have mostly auto but some marine engine repair experience.

New to forum can we post pics?
Please advise, over $ 1,400 for new trim unit. Thanks, var007

its a hydraulic system, and if it can lower that far the stop pin is missing.
the caps torque to about 70 ft pounds.
buy the dang tool or take it in.
tools are cheap compared to the damage you can cause by useing the wrong stuff.
about now a model number would help as they made a lot of systems over the years.

Hey, Rodbolt.d:)

I found problem... The cap is loose and has been working its way out and thats why its been hitting so hard and damaged the cap and seal.

Should be a warranty issue don`t you think?
My Dad does`nt trust our local Skeeter shop so thats why He wants me to work on it.

We are going to tighten it up and try to fill it and see what happens.
Thanks, var 007

if the cap is damaged replace it. the tool is not expensive, the unit is about 1600 dollars.
