Is there any good reason for not installing an inline fuel filter between the fuel pump and carb.?

It may have an affect on the fuel pressure. Why whould you want to do that?

Two potential leak's, and a restriction.

Thanks for the comments.
I found particles in the carb that could not have passed through the fuel pump screen. I have eliminated the carb gaskets and the fuel line as sources. the only other option I can think of is the fuel pump gaskets. I want to eliminate any chances of contamination getting to the carb.

Most engines have one. It prevents stuff getting into the carb(s). Lots of places to pick up debris between the tank and the carbs.

Re: Good reason for not installing fuel filter?

While what has been stated is obvious, I would say that an in line filter placed securely and installed properly ( so it wont leak), which does not constrict proper fulel pressure is a GOOD idea... I know a carb cleaning project is not that big a deal, but why fix something that need not be broken...spend the time on the water.. I know I do!!

~ This is esp. true with older boats and OLDER metal tanks on these older boats. I replaced my tank, all fuel lines and put an in-line filter on my "new to me" 1964 Rude Lark VI...no fuel issues since then..

Hope this helps

An inline filter is a good idea, but before the fuel pump would be the correct place to have it....If there are problems with the fuel pump gaskets failing, then that needs to be addressed...

There is a filter in the tank pick-up, and another in the fuel pump. Run fresh fuel, two is enough.

I have a mercury that has an inline filter just before the carbs and have had no trouble with it.
it is not a super fine filter but will do what you described.
removes carb clogging particles.

If the debris in the carburetor(s) that you speak of is very small black particles, that is caused by the interior of the fuel line(s) starting to disintegrate. In which case, and if so, replace the fuel hose(s)

Thanks to everyone for the help.

I split the old line and found no evidence of any disintergration.

if you want to install a filter, imho, a water/fuel filter betweeen the tank and buld is best. if it's getting crud past there it needs to be addressed asap.
