I was changing the impeller, and my manual says to disconnect the shift linkage where it connects underneath the lower carb. It said to pull the pin to disconnect and push the shift rod link toward the powerhead to free the shift rod. I did all that, now it's back together and I can't shift into forward or neutral either by using the remote shifter, or manually shifting. What did I do wrong?

Could be the pin didn't engage correctely.,but you need to turn the propshaft by hand if the engine is not running, for it to shift properly.

Is the offset in the shift rod facing forward? did you turn the shift rod at all when disassembled?

Re: HELP!!!!!! Won't shift into gear

I never actually got the lower unit removed ( all the bolts are seized...so thats a project for another day), but I think I figured out the problem is that I didn't realize there is a connection to the shift rod actually UNDERNEATH the lower carb which somehow came loose...is there an easy way to reconnect this without removing the lower carb? Would it be easier to access if I removed the lower cowling?

If you remove the lower pan(Cowling), it will afford a much better view to hook it back up...
