I just bought a 1988 Evinrude 175hp Sorry I can't read the model number.

starts right up and runs great, till you shut it off?

What happens is when you turn the key off the idle will go down slighty, but it will not shut down till it feels like it?? This may take 10 sec or 10 min?

If you turn the key back on it will race up and idel normal?

I have traced all the wires and all seems well?

so I guess the question is what makes the motor shut down, and what should I look for?

I should say that I have replaced the key switch with a brand new one and still the same problem.

Thanks Guys!!

Re: Evinrude will not shut off?

what makes her shut down: the keyswitch connects a kill wire originating from the powerpack(s), black with yellow tracer, to a ground wire, black.

The keyswitch has two terminals marked "M" - one with the black and the other with the black/yellow...when the key is off, those two terminals should be connected.

The emergency kill switch, which you should have one of, by the way, does the same thing, grounds out the kill wire.

Another way to shut it off is to flood it out by pushing the key in to activate the primer.

Assuming your new keyswitch is hooked up right, the kill wire must have become disconnected or developed a break inside the insulation somewhere between the powerpacks and the keyswitch. Could be the ground wire I guess, but then it should have no effect on idle speed.

I'm guessing by the change in idle speed that one of the packs' wires has got disconnected somehow, so you're shutting off one bank of cylinders but not the other.

To find out which one, use an insulated spark plug boot tool to pull a spark plug wire with the engine running and the key off. If the RPMs drop noticeably, then that cylinder is still on. If it doesn't change, then it is off.

I had the same exact thing with my 200 Evinrude. It turned out to be the exact thing mentioned here. I tracked the yellow and black wires from the power pack and sure enough there was a connection off. Reconnected it and everything is perfect now.

Re: Evinrude will not shut off?

Ok I just went out side and started the motor, with the key off and the motor running it is the lefty side (from outside of boat) that makes a difference in running.

Right side stays the same.

So this means the left side power pack is the one not shutting down??

Thanks guys!!

Standing behind the boat, facing the back of the motor, the side on the left, that would be the port side that is not shutting down. The other side being the starboard side.

Re: Evinrude will not shut off?

All fixed!!

It was the rubber plug in on the port side (d:)) the little pin inside lost its wire, looked ok, and pluged in and out, but when I went with a tester to the other side of the plug nothing??

So I gave it a small tug and the wire came right out the plug and left the pin behind.

So just cut it off and put a new plug, good as new!!

Thanks guys for your help!!

Re: Evinrude will not shut off?

I have a 1965 Evinrude Lark that is doing the same thing. I have checked and rechecked the wires and found nothing wrong. The switch is new and hooked up according to the schematic in my manual. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? Could the new switch be bad?

start a nes thread, the difference in the ign system on your rig and the system on an 88 175 is like night and day.
they both use magnets and a rotor but after that they start differing quite a bit.
