I'm needing to know what other adhesives will work with sealing the core plug in a '79 Johnson 100hp carb considering that the OMC adhesive M is no longer availible in it's "original form". I have read here that the OMC adhesive M is similar if not identical to (replaced by) 3M 847, Marprox Sealer 1000, and "Boat Armor". I am having a hard time finding any of these locally (in stock). I have found every Permatex under the sun in local auto parts stores so if there is a compatable Permatex substance I would just assume use that than have to special order the 3M/Marpox stuff....any ifo or experiences as far as substitutiung.

Actually there is no reason to use sealer on the core plugs. Tapping the dome portion of the core plug effectively seals it tightly.

However, there is a substance called "Gasiola", pronounced "Gas E Olla", which is a red substance in a small can, available at most automotive part stores. Simply coat the top area of the core plug after installing it.

Re: Carb core plug adhesive

I also had a guy at a local dealership tell me that he rebuilt carbs without using any adhesive or sealant on the core plugs. There was also a video link posted here at one time showing a guy rebuild the carbs on a 80's Johnson 115...it appeared that this guy did not use any thing on the core plug either, just tapped them in. Anybody out there make a case for using the adhesive?

OMC manual says if there's leaking around the core plug, first give it another rap with the flat punch, if the problem persists install a new one with a little type M.

I have been unable to find gasiola at any local parts store...in fact I went to 4 parts stores and West Marine and no one had even heard of it (same goes for Sealer 1000).My wife has so many different types of nail polish that I don't know where to start...did find this "seal all" stuff. Anyone ever used this or think it would be good to use on the core plugs...says can be used on carb floats? Looks to be similar to clear nail polish. http://www.eclecticproducts.com/sealall.htm

Info on Gasiola below:

http://www.hatcreekoutfit.com/xcart/customer/product.php?productid=138

Sealer 1000 was original made by Marprox. I don't know if they're still in business or not. Boat Armor manufacturers the same substance which is of course called Boat Armor Sealer 1000. OMC made the same substance under the name of OMC Adhesive and this is still carried by the Evinrude/Johnson dealerships but under a Bombardier name.

Why your auto parts stores never heard of the brands above is a mystery to me.

Gasoila, BRP part # 200763

BRP Adhesive - "847 Adhesive comes in a convenient 5 oz. squeeze tube. It was released primarily as a metal-to-metal contact adhesive (cylinder to crankcase, gearcase halves, etc) and can be used in all applications where we formally recommended Adhesive Type "M"." Part # 776964

not at this point...I'm just doing my first carb rebuild using my OEM manual...the manual calls for Adhesive M, so I'm just trying to follow as it as close as possible considering my vast inexperience.
