I am getting ready to take family out on lake for weekend, I was double checking the timing and carb adjustment per Joe's advise in a earlier thread, which worked great. But as I was standing behind the motor a small 1/2 long x 1/4 wide spring popped out around distributor area on my 66' Johnson 80hp. I cannot find where this goes and now you have to back advance down manually. Please help before we leave, I don't like to go without my boat! Thanks

Head to your local library and see if they have outboard service manuals. They may not have one for your exact engine but they might have one close enough.

Could you post a picture of that part, or discribe a little better what it look's like. Looking in the manual, I can't think of where that part came from.

Re: HELP! FLYING PARTS!

If that spring is goofy looking spring, shaped somewhat like an "L" with a hook on one end and a "U" shaped grabber on the other end, that goes on top of the vertical throttle arm where the bar from the distributor sits upon the arm.

The "Hook" end goes in the small hole in the arm and the "U" shaped grabber locks into the groove in top of the arm, thustly retaining the distributor arm onto the vertical throttle arm.

I can't imagine that spring flying off that arm unless the end of the spring broke or the top of the throttle arm cracked off. Let us know what you find.

Re: HELP! FLYING PARTS!

Thanks for your response, The spring on the vertical timing arm is in place. This is a regular compression spring that popped out of nowhere when i reved motor up in tank of water. Approx. 1/2 long x 1/4 diameter. Went ahead and dropped boat in lake last night, Started like a dream, idled great, but now no top end at all?

Re: HELP! FLYING PARTS!

You've went from a flat spring in your first post to a round compression spring in the next. Which is it? I'm lost as to what is happening here. A picture would help if possible.

EB.... If you have a problem posting a picture here, send it to me via email so that I can get a better idea of where that might go.

Internal choke solenoid spring? That would give the engine a fit. Butterflies would slam shut when the rpms are increased.
