What is the smallest motor to put on this boat for lake fishing the boat says to not exceed a 90hp on it and right now it has a 80hp that does not run. The boat is a 72 and motor is a 72 id rather not put alot of money in the motor cause parts are hard to get and expensive so if I go to a newer and smaller motor Im fine but it still needs to push the boat with 6 people around without problems.

Personally, I don't think I'd go less than an eighty if that's what's on there. If it's rated for a 90 maximum I think the 80 should be fine. I'm of the mind set that you should get as MUCH horsepower as you can afford up to the maximum rating for the hull. Another way to put it.... "When in doubt, MAX it out". d:) I don't recommend exceeding the hull's rating but almost everyone I've known that put a smaller motor on regretted it in very short order.

if you want the boat to push 6 people (adults) thats a fair bit of weight not knowing the weight of the boat if it;s glass then will be fairly heavy thus I wouldn't go any less hp. I used to own a 16' stebercraft not overly heavy boat however struggled with 4 people and some gear with 85hp.

I agree also on maxing out the hp for best satisfaction....... BUT 6 people in a 16' boat is a heck of a load for a boat that size.

I think BOA uses 150# per person so you have 900# of persons, a 75 or 90 Merc (same engine essentially) another 305#, at least 1 battery of another 50#, 10 gal of gas and container at 100#, some life jackets, paddles, anchor and tackle boxes (no live well full of water, or trolling motor, or trolling motor batteries) for another 100# adds up on my calculator to 1452# of "Motor, persons, and gear". :%

I think you are headed for disaster! :%

use to have a monarch stay with 80 or above, or just buy everyone a paddle.

6ppl in a 16ft boat is CRAZY! now i guess it also depends what you are doing also, if you are getting in going straight to an island or a destination or something on a calm day it might not be to bad, but if you plan to do anything, like water sports or fishing or even cruising around for a while that is just ridiculous....

Re: 16' Monark with 80hp merc how small is smallest?

I have a 100hp Merc (1965, 14x17 prop) on my 16' Stevens (1970, low profile type, thick fiberglass) and it will plane out with 4 people, 15 gallons of fuel, anchor, and group 27 battery. With the same 4 people and enough beer, ice, soda to amount to a 5th person weight wise, I wasnt able to get on plane until I moved ALL the beer, ice, soda forward to under my feet, and it then only JUST got over the bow wave. The hull tag lists max weight, including persons, gear, motor, etc at 1185 LBS and 5 people max, for what its worth.

In my situation, I wouldnt think that a 115 would plane with 6 people and just boat running gear. Maybe a 125 and a 14x15 prop. It would also sit WAY too low in the water for me to be comfortable, but then again it only measures 12" from the water line to the the top of the hull with no one in it.

I'm not sure whats wrong with the motor when you say it isnt running, but between this forum and places like Grubbs Marine (http://www.oldmercs.com) you should be able to get it up and running without too much trouble (unless its seized, no compression, or something like that). Anyway, its at least another option to spending quite a bit of money on a motor with less power!

Re: 16' Monark with 80hp merc how small is smallest?

Well the problem is i get no spark i think it is the switch box and that part is $600 but it does come as a kit that includes the coil and trigger so its not that bad but im not sure if that will fix my problem plus i seen gas leaking from the carbs so i know they need a rebuild and not sure on anything in the lower if there is a problem there or not. So in all i could end up spending 1500+ to get this motor going and everyone is telling me parts are starting to be discountinued on it. Iv searched for motors and i can find them around 1100-1500 and they are 10-15 years newer

Thats a bummer about the switch box possibly being bad. They are a bit of a big ticket item. At least you could sell the motor you have now as parts, project motor, etc and re-coup some cost of a newer one.

I have had great luck advertising in the local papers for older boats, motors, and trailers. You would be suprised what some people have and want to get rid of cheap, espicially as summer winds down/christmas approaches. Best of luck!
