delaying starter

I have a 1989 mercury 150 v6 which has a starter delay when cold. The starter relay kicks in then there is a second delay before the starter turns the engine. When warm it cranks normally. My mechanic says its a weak starter. It may go another two years or it may quit tomorrow. New starter is $209 plus $75 labor.

Any advice?

Thanks

Re: delaying starter

Yup, starter. Assuming you're using a known good battery fully charged. And your battery connections are tight and free of corrosion. And the cables are in good condition. Before spending any money, if you haven't already, disconnect, clean, sand with fine grit sandpaper, and reconnect all the cables from the battery to the solenoid to the starter and battery to engine block.

If a brush set is available for your motor, the rebuild is within the grasp of the average do-it-yourselfer with a manual.

I highly recommend doing it before your next outing, or else practice rope-starting that beast. 8)

Your mechanic is prolly correct. It's possible you might make it better by cleaning all connections from battery to solenoid to starter. Cleaning/ replacing brushes might also help avoid the big hit of a new one. Some local elec motor shops will rebuild yours for <$100
Good Luck
