150HP SR4 Electrical conversion

I have a 1988 150 HP V6 with a 16 amp stator on it. With power tilt and instruments, it barely keeps the main engine battery up.

Can a later model 40 amp stator and flywheel be installed on this engine? What years and models would fit?

If I can get the dual coil AC off the stator, I can design the electronics to maintain both the engine battery and the trolling motor batteries. I would share that design with you folks.

Alternately, is it possible to install a belt driven alternator on this engine without going broke?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Have you considered dual batteries with an AB switch and trickle charger? probably cheaper than the conversion.

Re: 150HP SR4 Electrical conversion

I like to camp and fish at the same time at Voyagers National Park. The problem is that the trolling batteries will go flat after one hard day, or a few easy days. The lake's big enough and you do enough running around that if I could get 20 A into them when the big one is running, I'd get by.

Unless i do a lot of night fishing and have to run the nav lights, the main battery usually stays up.

There are good used 40 A parts available for about 25 cents on the dollar. Question is, will they fit?

A small, relatively quiet gas fired 12 volt charger might be an option.

Thanks

yes, you can upgrade to a 40 amp system. i just downgraded mine to a 16 amp system. i have all the old spare parts, including the flywheel. hint hint. email me
myoutboards@yahoo.com

you would need the 40amp flywheel, 40 amp stator, 2 voltage regulators and a handfull of electrical connectors from your local marine store. thats it!

My 2 cents.....

I have the same issue when camping in the back woods.
I tried to install an Isolator between my starter battery and my trolling battery. It does help but it only charges the battery when your at WOT touring around the lake (and not fishing).

The problem is that a 120AH Trolling battery needs to be charged with a maximum of 25% of capacity or you'll cook the battery. So, if you do the math, 30Amps over 4 hours = 120AH if its competely dead. Secondly, you need a "smart" charger to ensure long life of the battery.

I went out and bought a product called StayNCharge which needs a 12Vdc (actually 13.3Vdc) input from either a running Outboard, Truck or a shore generator w/ 12V output. Sure it takes a bit to get things charged-up, but much cheaper on gas than running your outboard WOT.

Here's the link....... www.stayncharge.com
Sold on the Internet in a bunch of locations.
Nothing else like it on the market.

I have some ideas about using the raw ac from the alternators, at higher voltage, and TSR technology to stuff lots of 12 V amps wherever it's needed. I haven't done the research yet, but it might be done with off the shelf parts.

Phatmanmike,
Just curious, why did you downgrade to 16A?

John....... for $50 USD, you can buy the StayNCharge that will charge whatever the outboard can handle.

Probably cheaper than re-inventing the AC/DC convertor.

What is the food source for the StayNCharge?

Hey JM,

Not exactly sure of the question.
If you mean what's the power input, 12VDC from either a Car, Boat, or 12VDC shorepower generator.
I like it because I can Drive and Charge from the Jeep.

Note: My digital Marine charger will not work with the StayNCharge due to its circuitry protection.

Good Luck. CF
