New Seafoam Procedure !!!!

I found this one out by accident guys.Once or twice a season,I usually pull the plugs, spray a generous amount of Deep creep into each cylinder of my Evinrude ,put the plugs back in and wait a few hours and start it and blow out the crap.Well This last time, the few hours turned into a week instead.I assumed it would just run out or evaporate in that much time. When I finally got back to the boat and started it ,I only had time to let it idle in the slip for 10 minutes.I could not believe the black crap that came out of the exhaust. It left a sludge ring around the motor and the entire boat that was so thick ,I had trouble cleaning it off.It seemed to me to be the best cleaning I had ever had.Thought I would share that since I had always heard that leaving it soak too long would solidify the carbon. Not true in this case. Thanks for the info, Charlie. I guess this is a case where more (Or Longer) is better.....

I have used it that way for a while. I have gone as far as to fill the cylinger when it is at TDC and let it soak overnight. Same results as yours with pieces of carbon coming out.

Recently did 2 old chainsaws the same way.

One other thing while adding a liquid to a cylinder you can introduce the hydraulic effect and wreck your motor.:^:%:'(

If it's already at TDC when you pour the liquid in, it can't possibly hydro-lock.

Re: New Seafoam Procedure !!!!

Doing this might harm your engine more than doing good.
First big peaces of build up may come off and not dissolve, they can come in between the piston and cilinder or valves and will make some nice scratches loosing compression or even seize the piston.
Secondly during normal operation the piston will make scratches in the cilinder any way and those scratches get filled up with carbon, when you dissolve the carbon the scratches will come clear again and cause loss of compression and loss of power.

Mike, decarbing is a common procedure.I dont see how it can cause damage. The decarb spray dissolves the carbon into gooey muck, not big pieces.Charlie

And if the build-up is that bad, think what it's doing to your rings and seats...I'm for a regular decarb to prevent this from happening...

Re: New Seafoam Procedure !!!!

Well, I don't know about you guys, but when I spray the stuff into the combustion chamber I usually turn it over a few times before I put the plugs back in and I don't spray all that much in there.

Now If I turned the engine up so that the plug holes were up and I completely filled the chamber with Foam, then I can see where the hydro effect might be a problem.

But if it were that bad, you'd think that the starter would load up and not turn the engine over.

It is normal and desirable to have a small carbon ring at the top of the cylinders.

Re: New Seafoam Procedure !!!!

The Deep Creep can does say that it can be used as an engine fogging oil so I would take that to mean that it is OK to leave in the cylinders for a long period of time...can't trust the can all the time though.
