I have a 700W Kenmore microwave oven that I bought in 1987. I have been half hoping it would croak so I could get one of the new 1250W units with a turntable.

This morning after steaming the veggies for my breakfast it started beeping weakly and erratically. The display went to wierd numbers with no meaning and it would not respond to the keypad. The display window appeared to be steamy on the inside.

I unplugged it, thanked it for 19 years of loyal, faithful service, and went out and bought the one that Consumer Reports rates the best.

Before taking the old one out to the trash I had an impulse to plug it in and give it another try. The display still appears foggy, but it works again. I nuked my dinner pizza successfully.

I have already bought the replacement. What do I do with the old one, trash it, give it away, save it for a spare?

Any thoughts?

Re: Micropuzzle.

Ditto on Dr's suggestion.Pawn shops down here wouldn't give a guy $2 for that old of a micro wave.I tried once.It was quite the wierd experience. My son was with me at the pawn shop and we both just agreed to throw it out when we left in the truck.Funny thing is ,some guy stole it from the back of our truck just before we walked out of the pawn shop.A guy that had just entered the pawn shop told us in an urgent manner that he had witnessed the guy slealing it and throwing it in the trunk of his green car. When we exited the store,in somewhat of a hurry,we saw him burning rubber and fishtailing through an intersection almost causing a wreck as he sped through a red light. My son and I laughed about it all the way home.We would have just laughed about it halfway home ,but we realized during our drive home ,between breaths ,that we had boxed the old one up in the new box of the one we had recently purchased. We then continued our almost uncontrollable laughter. It's a wonder we weren't in an accident.8) Sorry to hi-jack your thread JB.Thought you might get a laugh as well.

Use it for casting metals or drying small pieces of wood.

It has a 700W transformer in there which can be useful. The secondaries are 2000V, but normally they;'re separate from the primaries so it's easy to strip them off and rewind it for something else.

Otherwise, freecycle it. Since '87 have you ever once needed a spare microwave?
