Caulk or gasket under winshield?

I'm just wondering what is used to seal the winshield unit at the hull (top of the hull - is that the"gunwale"?). Is it caulked or is there a gasket material to put between before screwing in from below?

I'll be re-attaching mine this winter and I'd like to do it right. Now, there is a gap in most parts of it.

tmh - mine has a gasket that kind of looks like what they use under a pickup truck cap. It's a real tight fit - the gap isn't more than about 1/16" anywhere. Hasn't leaked in 18 yrs (knock on teak). I'd bet that 3M 5200 would do a heck of a job, too.

I would be hesitant to use the 5200 due to it being permanent 4200 will work and you can get it apart if you need to.

I used a neophrane foam-type gasket strip - it's a similar material as used in wet diving suites. It compresses well, but also fills in gaps well. Don't know about the durability though in that kind of application, but at least - if you need to replace it, or the plexiglass - you can get your windshield assy off more easily than if you use some kind of adhesive.

go to the HD, get some 1/2 " stick on foam insulation thats goes around doors, stick it to the bottom of the frame and install, squeeze it down tight. cheap fix.

Thanks guys. Sounds like it's off to Home Depot for some gasket material! The weather stripping for doors sounds like aa good a bet as anything! That should also help with any "rattling" sounds from the windows when hitting the big waves.

I'll probably fill the screw holes with 3M 5200 or 4200 before re-screwing the window in place. It's loose now so I assume they are stripped a bit.
