I have an 82' 90hp evinrude which just had both carbs re-done and was running great. After about a 45 minute run the boat wouldn't start. The starter just spun when I turned the key. I replaced the starter and plugs. Now the starter turns the flywheel but it won't turn over. I have charged the battery and tried, no luck. Thoughts?

Hi Bstrube

You have checked to verify no spark, correct? Disconnect the black/yellow wire at the terminal board or pack and see if you get spark...

Disconnect the main wiring harness, jump out the starter, you can take a jumper cable and go from the positive on battery or the positive on the starter solonoid. If the engine starts(,the engine will run without the harness conneted if its ok)your key switch could be bad.or a open wire, while its diconnected ,be sure there isnt a bunch of corrosion in the harness plugs. To shut engine down ,choke it

Are you sure the kill switch lanyard didn't get pulled by accident.

Remove the lanyard and hold the button in manually, just to check.

I am trying to understand what you mean by your description of the problem. You indicate the flywheel turns, but the engine does not turn over. Do you mean the flywheel key is broken and the flywheel spins on the end of the crank? Or does the engine turn over, but just won't start?

I tried the to hold the kill switch manually, no luck... The engine will turn over but will not start. There is no combustion. I am not that familiar with outboards, but I just ordered a service manual, so I am not sure what/where the main wiring harness is. I will try to disconnect the kill wire (I am assuming that is the black/yellow wire) and check for spark. It is difficult because I don't have a helper to turn the engine over.
