Hello,

I'm in the process of rebuilding the carbs on the mentioned outboard. Picked up Sierra carb kits (#18-7042). Everything in kit matches up with the exception of the bearing needle valves. The old ones are reddish in color & fit in the slow speed needle valve hole easily. The new ones are white & wider due to a tapered big end. Seems it would take a good amount of force to get the new one down into the hole. Forcing anything on a carb seems like the wrong thing to do. Hoping someone can tell me whether this is the right replacement bearing to use. Below is a pick of the old & new bearings side by side. Thanks for any help!

They should be tight Keith to help form an air tight seal around the needle and hole. OEM needle bearings are tight also. Use a little lube like TCW-3 on the bearing to help get it in. A drop on the needle will also help when screwing the needle in.

Hi Brian,
Yes, they are supposed to be tight. The originals get hardened from the fuel with age and lose their ability to seal.
Got a new project? I thought your 16 American had a Merc on it? Had it out much? I'm still plugging away on my 18-footer. Got one stringer left to install, then the floor and deck... Not gonna get it wet this year, though...

I appreciate the help! Pushed it in there with a little lube. went down easier once past the first couple threads.

Hello Scott,
This motor is off a 16' aluminum lund fishing boat that i've had for several years. It's been running a little rough at low speeds. Hoping rebuilding carbs will help.
Haven't had a chance to get the american out again. Gonna have to wait for spring now. Looking forward to figuring out the porpoising issue & just getting everything else dialed in.
I remember how relieved i was when the last stringer was complete. Almost shed a tear d:)
Looking forward to seeing more18 progress pic's.
