Hey all. First time poster. Great site with a lot of good info. My name is on the wall of shame somewhere for not getting my last boat winterized by a pro and ended up with a cracked block. After my wife cracked my block, I took a couple of years off and then bought my 1993 Celebrity. I had the pro's winterize last year to the tume of $180. I guess I'm growing balls again and thanks to sites like this, I think I'm ready to tackle it again. Heres what I've done so far.

1. ran fuel stabilizer through system last time in the water
2. changed oil and filter
3. Opened 2 plugs, one one each side of the block and drained water
4. pulled the hoses on each manifold and drained water

Still to do:

1. drain lower unit and re-lube
2. hook up muffs to RV antifreeze in tub and run til stat opens
3. fog carb

I've read posts on her about pouring AF in other areas like the stat housing. Is this necessary.

What have I forgotten or screwed up so far.

Thanks guys

Not recommended. Either drain everything absolutely dry & leave it dry or if you want to use AF, pour it in thru the t-stat housing & hoses per the manual.

I reccomend using the engine seawater pump to pump AF through the system, if its raw water cooled the system MUST be drained prior to the AF mixture.
if you dont drain the seawater out of the block you may get an insuffiecient AF concentration in the block and all of it goes out the risers.
on 4 stroke motors I also add a bottle of crank case stor-n-start to help protect the shiney parts inside the motor.
I never leave the system dry unless it was an emergency situation.
dont know where stevie gets his reccomendation from but I have never seen it.
been winterizing here and outside ft worth TX for the better part of 25 years and have not lost a water system yet. knocking on wood :):).
while it can be done by pouring down the t-stat opening its way to time consuming for me.
here in the salt pond if ya dont have to remove it sometimes ya just dont. its ok if you have been maintaining the rig but terrible if its the first time ya ever saw it.

rodbolt - well, here, for starters - step 14.

http://forums.iboats.com/bbBoard.cgi?a=viewthread;fid=24;gtid=1184034

There have been a few other discussions on here as well - would take me half the night to find them all.

Every manual I've ever seen says pour it in the t-stat housing & hoses. Takes me all of 10 mins to pop mine (and that includes un-doing the hose clamps), but as you say, I do mine every winter & it comes right off no problems.

Re: 4.3 lx on 1993 Celebrity-I found out water freezes

Ayuh,......... while I don't boat on the Salt Pond,...........

I've Never had a Busted Block on a Motor that was Properly Drained either...............

And,......... Even though there's Always the Possibility of a Busted Block from a Poorly Done Winterization,..........

I'd venture to say that 99.9% are Caused by Not Draining the Block,+ Manifolds.........

14. Disconnect the water and muffs and allow the water to drain out of the drive. Now get your manual and remove every drain plug on your engine, manifolds, coolers, heat exchangers, water pumps, and anything else that could have RAW water in it. DO NOT drain the anti-freeze side of a closed cooling system. Look at the book and make sure you have them all removed. Look around, missing one could cost you an engine block. Get a small screwdriver and probe inside every hole you remove a plug from. Make sure there is nothing blocking the water from getting out. Be sure the engine is also as level as possible so as much water as possible is drained out. Some of the coolers for oil and power steering can be drained by removing a hose easier than removing the plugs.
Put all the plugs back in and hoses back on.
If you are one of those that must use antifreeze instead of just draining, for whatever reason, you can fill the block and manifolds with a 50/50 water/antifreeze mix through the hoses to the manifolds and coolers and removing the thermostat and pouring antifreeze into the engine block. Many of the RV type antifreeze do not have corrosion inhibitors in them because they are meant to be used in the domestic water system.

I think Don sums it up Well,.......

For Joe Blow Backyard Boat Mechanics,.......
Probably 98% of the Frozen Blocks are Caused by the "Run it til the T-stat Opens" method than Anything Else...........

2 Things I've learned in the last 50 or so years,...............

1)...... Water Flows Downhill.........
2)...... Air Doesn't Freeze................

1)...... Water Flows Downhill.........
2)...... Air Doesn't Freeze...............

water flows donwhill seems to be a good notion. i just reread my oem service manual recently. it says to tilt the boat bow up whilst draineing. i assume to let the water run downhill. i had not done that in the past but did this year. the service manual says it's "recommended" to fill w/antifreeze. "thru the t-stat", "after draining all the water out." this info is for my 165. so i guess i'd say read "your" manual as for what the the oem recomends for your 4.3.
so far i don't plan on any antifreeze as i have been convinced that air don't freeze even though it is "recommended" in the service manual. it's interesting that the service manual only has that one item as recomended. all other winterizeing items are to be done. i guess it's up to me......hope i aint here for a broke block next spring.......i don't think i will be....but time will tell..........

Re: 4.3 lx on 1993 Celebrity-I found out water freezes

For Your boat Ziggy,......

There's No Need to elevate the tongue of the wagon,.....

There's 1 Block Drain on the lower rear side of the Block,.. Port-side......
There should be a Manifold Drain just Above that 1.......
There Might be a Riser Drain on the lower rear corner, Away from the Motor......
Those,+ Pulling the Big Hose from the Engine's Waterpump,....
And You're Good to Go............Cold......

Re: 4.3 lx on 1993 Celebrity-I found out water freezes

yep, yer right on bondo. exactly what i did. i read my service manual after i'd done that, so went out and redid the draineing with the bow up. i got perhaps a 1/2 extra cup of water out of the block, dribbles of the manifold and nothing, at all out the riser. (nothing on the first draine either)yes, i probed the holes.......so didn't get much extra out for raisein the bow up, but i felt better as i'd done what the good book had told me to do.....:)

.Cold......
yep, already had a hard freeze here. if i didn't do it right. it's to late. saw a childs wagon at a cutomers house yesterday, had water in it and was froze solid at 8 am, maybe 1-2" of water in the wagon.......is it spring yet?
