Type C for Lower gear unit

I have been told that I can subsitute Automatic Transmission Fluid for Type C oil in my 1969 Johnson 55 HP engine with electronic shifting. Is this correct?

I wouldn't. those things are trouble some enough, without changing to different lube.

I have heard that advice come from an OMC engineer, for emergency use only. With the Type C, now "Premium Blend" readilly available there's no emergency so don't do it.
