1.The water pump kit i got does not have an oil seal in the top of the pump body. The drive shaft just passes through the top of the stainless steel liner and plastic housing. I noticed that the one I removed from the drive did not either, but I thought it had just deteriorated away. The manual says to press the seal into the pump body, but also that later models do not have the seal. There is a rubber ring that goes over the top of the pump body. Is this all correct?

2. The pump base that came with the kit has one oil seal in the bottom. The old base looks like it has an oil seal and a blue plastic base. The new base has an oil seal, but the rest is part of the base casting. Is this the new style?

Re: Alpha 1 water pump questions

Go to this link http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6B3R3.PDF and turn to page 3B-21 it will show you the 3 seals on the base. The outer seal is only an oring, the inner seals are 2 opposing seals designed to keep oil in on one side and water out from the other.
Then turn to page 3B-51 which shows the upper housing. There is NO seal inside the upper housing for sealing the pump. There is a square cross sections slinger that sits on top of the housing around the shaft, but it does NOT go inside the housing.
The impeller itself seals inside the housing.

Re: Alpha 1 water pump questions

Thank you, Don S for clearing that up for me. It just looked like something was missing at the top of the pump body. I've attached a couple of pictures. It turns out that what I thought was remnants ofr aan old oil seal on the pump I removed from the outdrive was excessive Pefect seal from a previous replacement,

Glad you figured it out, but you didn't post "A Couple of Pictures" you posted the same one 3 times.
Did you have any different ones?

Don S: Do you have a link to the manual section for the upper drive that you could share? I need tocheck the shift shaft bushing (mine looks like it is missing)
Thank You

Re: Alpha 1 water pump questions

The manual from the link shows to torque the water pump nuts to 60-80 inch-lb, but another manual indicates 25-30 for the smaller nuts and 35-40 for the larger one. Can I assume the link manual is correct, and the other (Seloc) is incorrect?

I'm like Bondo, never used a torque wrench there. But if you want, use the MERC specs, they are the ones that designed the pump, so why cut the torque in half, especially on nylocs.
