40 hp evinrude won't stay running

I recently acquired a 40 hp evinrude. I think it is a 1988 and has been sitting up over a year. It is hard to start, won't ide and won't stay running unless I continually work the choke or pump the bulb. If I put it in gear and rev the rpm's, it seems to run better. Once it stops, the bulb is soft and I have to reprime the bulb to restart it. Where should I start; tank, hose, bulb, rebuild carbs, adjust carbs, fuel pump. I have no fuel leaks. Any help to put me in the right direction, will be appreciated.

Your explanation of the problem and the fact that the engine has sat for over a year indicates that the carburetor is fouled, gummed, clogged.

The cure would be to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor with a complete carburetor kit (about $20.00).

The primer bulb going soft is normal. It does not stay hard when running.

Thanks for the reply. I will pick up two carburator kits Monday. Do I need to buy a manual also, or does the kit come with adequate information?

NEVER work on an outboard without a good manual.

I'm in total agreement with JB on the manual issue. The carb kits are simply parts, no instructions.

However, this may be of some interest to you.

(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

OK, I cleaned and rebuilt both carbs and set the floats. The engine starts but still will not idle. It will run at a fast idle (with the idlle lever up) as long as I pump the bulb every couple minutes, but will not idle no matter what I do. The only way it will restart is if I pump the bulb till it gets hard again. I tried setting the jets different positions but still no help. What should I do next?

Yes I did blow the jets with carb cleaner and compressed air. Is the fuel pump on the side of the engine where the fuel inlet screen is or the other side.

the manual will show you where the pump is at, but if you follow the gas line coming in it will hook to the fuel pump then the lines from the fuel pump will go to the carb (s)
