I recently bought this motor and was told everything was ok but it has been very hard to start. The few times I got it to run and stay running it seemed to perform nicely, idled down real smooth and pushed boat right along at wide open throttle. Most of the time it won't start and when it does it needs to be run at fast idle to keep it from stalling. What could be causing this?

Carbureted two strokes need a bit of throttle for the first minute or so after a cold start. Post your starting procedure and we'll go from there.

my old 65 6hp starts good, but I almost need to half choke it for a bit to keep it running. after it warms up a bit it's fine

wonder if it's loosing it's prime and not getting gas at first. The fuel pump on those is run off of a vaccum that isn't generated until the motor starts. You need to have a float bowl fuel of fuel to get it to start.

If you are following starting instructions and the choke is closing properly you probably need to rebuild the carb with special attention to cleaning. If the motor hasn't run in a long time the fuel system should be checked from tank to carb.Don't shift it at anything higher than idle as you will ruin the clutch dog.

It is hard to start even after it has warmed up for a few minutes. All new fuel lines connectors and bulb and I don't think it is losing its prime because bulb stays firm. It does seem to run smoother with choke left out a little even after it warms up. I wasn't able to get it to start at all yesterday

Forgot to add that motor was bought from a certified OMC shop and had been gone through recently

Again, I'll ask for your starting procedure! But -- if the choke needs to be out for it to stay running, it has some carb issues and a rebuild is necessary. When a dealer says "gone through" it means absolutely nothing. Have you pulled the plugs to see if they are wet with fuel when it doesn't start? If they are, you have a spark issue. If they are dry, you have a fuel issue. Put some premixed fuel in a squirt bottle. Remove the air box. With the throttle open, squirt some fuel in the carb. Close the choke and pull it over. If if starts, you have a fuel issue -- more than likely carbs but it could be a fuel pump as well.

I believe that you also have to set the "slow speed needle" on the carburetor correctly. You sound as though you may be running lean. Try backing it out 1 turn and see what happens.

Re: 1990 6 HP evinrude difficult to start.

My starting procedure consists of hooking up fuel line, priming bulb pulling out choke and setting throttle to start position. It acts like it wants to fire on the first or second pull but after that I am just wasting my time. If I get it to fire I give it a little gas to warm it up but as soon as I push in the choke and give it some gas, it stalls I've pulled the plugs and they look more oily than wet with fuel. I will try your reccomondations. Thanks

I agree with "ezeke" Try screwing out the idle mixture adjust screw a bit but I expect you will find that the carb needs cleaning.

When sorted out get it up to working temperature and adjust the idle screw for best running.

The idle screw is the one at the top, front, portside corner of the carb with a spring under its head. #15 in the diagram at http://epc.brp.com/Scripts/ImgServ....77\09.TIF&ilSC=25&ilIV=0&ilBR=0&ilIF=G&ilRE=8

I just got this motor back from the shop and they said the carb was very dirty and probably related to engine encountering the new ethanol mixed fuel which dumped the debris throughout the fuel system into the carb. It has run several times now and seem to be running fine.
