Will Not Stay Running

I have a 1979 Johnson 140 V4 engine that is hard to start and when started, will not stay running. Can prime the ball until tight. Will run for a few seconds and then shut off. Note: this motor has not ran sine 1997. It mixes oil automatically but was told to mix oil and gas until I know for sure the pump is pumping. Was told that running double oil would not hurt it. Was also told that, that may also be my problem. Excessive smoking. Help!!!!!!!!

this applies to all outboards, no matter what hp or brand.

it's has sat for 10 years, the carbs are cruddy, the impeller is shot. running with extra oil is not going to hurt. just a little smokey. after getting it running decarb the engine.
