Hey all,

I have a '61 10hp Seahorse that is performing rather strangely.

Engine starts great, 2nd or 3rd pull in cold weather (i duck hunt). Under heavy load (14ft rivet deep-v, decoys, 2 guys) it runs fine at lower throttle. When I try to give it some gas, the engine starts racing but goes nowhere.

First time it happened I thought it was the shear pin, but no dice. I noticed that the existing shear pin was stainless steel! :/ Then I thought that the teeth on the gears in the gearbox were worn, but they looked fine. Also the spider gear connects to the drive shaft perfectly.

When I opened up the gearbox I did notice that the previous owner didn't have a real gasket on neither the gearbox cover OR where the lower unit disconnects.

I'll of course order gaskets, but does anyone else have any ideas?

sound like you have a spun prop. there is rubber between the inner and outer hud. the rubber is slipping. can be rebuilt at a prop shop/

It's a spun prop hub. To prove it, make a mark on the prop nut and another on the prop, aligned with the first. Then run the motor till the problem is experienced. Stop the motor and check the marks. If they are no longer aligned, it slipped. If they are still aligned, repeat the test-there is a slim chance they stopped slipping in the same position.

The pin is supposed to be stainless steel. That's what the rubber hub is in the prop for.

The skeg to gearcase joint gets a "spegetti" seal. There is not supposed to be any gasket between the gearcase and exhaust housing.

Thanks guys! I took the prop into the shop today and the hub was bad. Good call.
