Ok, i screwed up somewhere.

I removed the lower unit and replaced the seals while also replacing the impeller key in the shaft. I then replaced the spaghetti seal on the gearbox cover.

When I went to put the lower unit back on the motor, I got the drive shaft in ok at first, but then about 1/2 in to go I had problems. I did get the thing on but it wasn't easy. I could shift the gears, and rotate the gear shaft (with only a little effort).

I filled the lower unit with oil and then started the motor. Shaft turned ok. I turned it off and then noticed I couldn't shift into neutral.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried pulling gently on the start rope while you shift to neutral? Just enough movement to let the gears mesh.

Check the shift rod (through the access plate) Is it still connected? Is the shift rod moving up and down when you work the shift lever? Are you sure you got the phillips head pin through the lever in the gearcase? Answering these will go a long way toward diagnosing your problem.

HI, I have a 62 10hp evinrude. Did you have to split the shift rod when you drop the lower on that Johnson?
If so, did you couple the shift rod back together properly where it breaks?

When I first reassembled it I got the phillips head pin through the lever in the case. It took some finesse, but I did get it.

I did check the shift rod and it is connected. It tries to move up and down, but won't budge.

I pulled the start rope while trying to shift and it took some monkey-ing but I did get it to shift. Everything seemed to line up after that. I can move the prop freely in neutral and shift easily between gears. The prop stops when in Fwd or Rev.

Thanks itstippy!
