Re: Water in cylinders

Well, one way or another, the engine has to come out.

Just a thought ... Could the old flappers be removed, and newer ones be installed in the exhaust elbow just below the exhaust bellows ?I'm sure it will entail a bit more than just drilling a through hole for the pin,and I'm not sure what the flappers seat against.Maybe just a pipe dream.

Why would the engine need to come out for riser extensions?

Your shutter idea could work, I think....
Wouldn't need to pull the engine either....
It would be a cheap & easy fix if you could get the right fit on the shutter......8)......JK

Thanks Haut,

My thought was you just can't leave the old flappers inside. They will restrict the exhaust, and therefore power but I think it's doable.

Re: Water in cylinders

dhp, since he aint got engine operation problems, maybe the flapper made it's way out the exhust. maybe. i'd think i 'd at least make an attempt to locate them too though... lot's of good ideas here like usual. mugsy, in your opening statement ya state that ya R&Red the manifolds. i've not seen any remark that ya did the risers too. the waterjacket walls can rust thru in them and leak water back into the exhust system too.....just a thought....... or maybe i missed the read that said ya did R&R'em......good luck with yer venture........

Re: Water in cylinders

I R&Red the risers as well but after looking at the manifolds today the barely clear the top of the gimbal housing which is submerged at a resting postion in the water, which means I constantly have water at least at the height of the manifold log in the Y pipe with the height of the riser being the only thing above water. My stern sits very low in the water. I can make the extensions fit but I'm thinking it won't cure the problem. Would exhaust pipes through the transom be an option? Or just replace the the hard to get to flappers? I'm no novice when it comes to marine mechanics I just want it done right the first time.

Re: Water in cylinders

figured ya did R&R the risers but just had to ask. :) anyways ya look at it, yer risers gots to be higher than the water line. flappers don't keep the water out, they just keep it from rushin in when ya slow down quickly as you've stated yer doing. or from keepin a followin wave from ramin in yer exhust too. or while backin up. but they don't keep the water out, the risers bein above the waterline do......to me, its good that it's only happen on one side. kinda indicates to me that whatever is workin on one side aint on the other. seems like yer back to puttin in that flapper that ya know is missin. i don't know if ya looked, but guess i'd be wonderin if the other flapper is in place. it must be cause ya only got issues with one side....

Re: Water in cylinders

You would need to block off the Y pipe, if you went with thru hull exhaust...
If you are only getting water on 1 side, I would think that the shutter is working on one side, & that if it were present would work on the other side as well.....
If you think your static water level is high, then the extensions will certainly help....
Drain the block & pull the riser while in the water....
See for yourself what the true level is.....
Fixing the shutter & adding extensions would be the way to go, IMHO
DHP's idea does have merit as well, but if the water level is wrong I would not drill into the Y pipe........
Every boat is different......
There used to be some good posts on the static level thing.....
Can't find 'em though...:'(.......JK
