Hard to figure but anytime you are running on any setting other than fast, energy is being wasted by the speed coils. I once owned a 16 foot MirroCraft side console with a 50 HP Evinrude. The trolling motor was a 32# Evinrude. That boat is about the same size and weight as your Lund. I could fish all day using the troller probably 60% of the time and would not run out of power. You simply need to use the largest capacity deep cycle battery you have room for. If power becomes an issue, parallel two batteries.

I wouldn't worry to much about the waste of power my mk 40pd says it will run 2hrs at 100% power and that is with the maximizer. And the maximizer claims that it gives 5 times the run time on a single charge, but i think that is very exagerated, because then w/o the maximizer you would only get about 20-30 min. on a single charge. I would say that you could get about 40 min- 1hr on a charge with that motor running 100%, but you wont be running it all the time i would guess, and i am sure you would need to run it 100% for an entire hour.

P.S. being in the same situation as you (being young w/ limited $$) i have discovered that it is better to wait and buy something that i really want then to waste $$ on a temporary substitute for that thing. If it were me (unless i would use the little motor after i bought a new one too) i would wait and buy the motor i really wanted. - but that is just my opinion.

If I can get the correct deal on it( I am fairly sure i can) I will try to get it and use it just for the grumman. I was just hoping it would not be too power hungry. When I can afford the Minn Kota I can use it just on the Lund. Then I won't have to keep swapping the motor from one to another.
BTW. I really like the Bigfoot troll button. If I get this motor for the grumman, I will most likely get one of those.

Bass-a-holic;

Minn Kota claims their Maximizer will give UP TO five times the run time.

The increased run time is available at lower speeds where the maximizer circuitry comes into play. As far as I know, there is no run time advantage to a maximizer motor at full power.

That said, most mariners employ their "trolling motors" primarily at slower speeds as an aid in boat positioning, or to sneak up on (hopefully) unsuspecting fish. In those circumstances the maximizer would give an advantage as you are not wasting electrical power in the speed coils.

Bassboy-
you can also get a little petal thing that clamps onto the motor shaft that you can control with your foot, if you mount the button on that and you would have a nice setup for bassin, almost as good as a regular bow mount.

That MG motor will be just fine for your grumman b/c you will be using it mainly for trolling. the numbers i gave you were for running at WOT, continuously, and you will not be doing that normally when fishing.

Being that I am at a similar age as you I had the same sort of budget restrictions when it came to getting a trolling motor for my 15 foot flats boat. I recently purchased a 55lb Minn kota Riptide bow mount because I am always in saltwater. In my opinion you should definitely wait until you can afford a bow mount model. I considered doing what you are planning on but i then realized that the transom mount motor will not really have enough support when running too and from your fishing spot. I wasn't sure i could clear my deck at all. I wouldn't concern yourself too much with the maximizer feature.I think it is more money than its worth you could buy a second deep cycle battery for less than it would cost you. then for shaft size its really hard to tell until you have your boat in the water. You should measure from the deck to the waterline and add about 15 inches to calculate it though. i would recommend a Minn kota for two main reasons: A) the tiller handle tilts up and down (A lot of guides down here master the technique of steering with their foot on the power head of the motor). B) their composite shaft is unbeatable. Finally I think that you need about a 40 - 55 lb motor even though you'll be fine with probably as low as a 30 lb.
This is the motor I would recommendhttp://www.iboats.com/mall/?view_id=237971&cart_id=223671821&session_id=025297575 :
any other questions, installation, let me know

Unfortunately that wouldn't fit on my boat. The odd shape and bow rails would interfer. I am hoping to get the powerdrive listed on my other post. How old are you? We have a couple of other younger people on this forum as well. Bass-A-Holic, who posted farther up the page, is fifteen.

I am fifteen as well. I do a lot of flats fishing near where I live. I just went through this whole process of research and bought a motor before I realized it was all right here. I am a newbie at this form stuff. I really recommend you get minn kotas composite quick release bracket or make one like it. I had a problem with my rub rail in the way and it shimmed it up enough to get over it and plus its good to be able to keep the motor off the deck when you don't need it. Make sure you get about a 50 amp breaker to mount near the battery.
